'Tactical' tracers?
At the gunshow yesterday , I noticed boxes of Federal Tactical tracers in .223 and .308.
Yep , they actually said tactical on the box. Looked at them and they were simply LC headstamped red-tip rounds.
So I asked the seller what made them tactical?
The look of confusion in his eyes trying to form an educated-sounding BS answer was priceless!

LC head stamp and red tip bullets sound like Lake City military tracer ammo to me. I don't think that Federal Cartridge has anything to do with Lake City.

Oh yes, ATK runs Lake City. ATK is the parent of Federal, Speer and others.

IIRC Federal holds the current contract to operate Lake City. It's a rather odd arrangement where whatever ammo maker offers the best (lowest) bid is awarded the contract to operate a government facility. One thing that I'm quite certain of is that if you weigh a Lake City 7.62 case you'll find the weight is identical to a Federal 308 case.

Military tracers are tactical because they have a delay and don't start to trace until they reach around 100 meters. Of course if you really want to be tactical you want the DIM or the infared tracers that are only visable with NOD's.

The green tracers that we used during my Military time in Germany start right away. We loaded one tracer - one regular - one tracer - one regular and so on. It really was fun back then, especially with the machine gun.
Btw, my whole life I'm looking for tactical toilet paper that never runs out. So in case you find some let me know

Again, ATK, the parent of Federal, has had the contract since 2001. Olin (Win.) had it before that and Rem. before that.
Contract awards are very complex and have a lot more involved than just lowest bidder.
They do a fine job IMO. See youtube for some videos.

As others have said ATK/Federal runs the Gov't owned Lake City Army Ammunition plant under contract. They have some arraignment where they buy any overrun or rejected lots and sell them to the public. They've been doing it for many years now.

Mack: I believe that tracers ( bright ) burn upon firing, Subdued tracers- start burning 100 m out, and DIM : supposedly only seen with NVD. I also thought that they cancelled the 5.56 DIM 2002 then started again 2011?? Not sure about their current status/availability. Be Safe,

I always figured the redacted line on my box said something like U.S. Govt. Property. Now I know it's tactical.

Not that uncommon - there are contractors running NASA facilities, Arnold Engineering Development Center, and others.

It's readily available. Aluminum foil. Rinse and re-use. Just be sure the shiny side is...never mind.
