No .38 spl!
I never thought I'd see the day. Not a single gun store in my area has, 158gr .38 spl. or +p. The only thing I can find is Buffalo Bore +p on-line. Expensive and then there's the shipping. I had previously thought only .22 was the problem.
Stores can't get the stuff in.

Same here. .38 Special, .22, and .30-30 have been tough to find. The shelves are loaded with .30-06, 5.56, and 7.62x39.

Those 3 calibers are US staples and have been for almost a century.
What on earth?

It's around here in Va. But overpriced like al the rest. Funny how it was said that 5.56 and 7.62 is plentiful now. I guess supply is catching up to demand. Maybe that's why the .38s/30-30s and such are not. They've been concentrating production on the mil rounds due to demand. Like a yoyo isn't it?

Try Georgia Arms -
http://georgia-arms.com/38special.aspx
It takes a couple weeks, but I have had great results as range / plinking ammo.
Ordered a thousand 158 Lead Semi-Wadcutters a couple weeks ago. Should have them on Monday.
Also had good results with their 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45ACP.

Haven't seen any .38 Special ammo of any flavor at my Wal-Mart for months. They get a little delivered and it's gone in minutes, according to the clerks. One LGS had a single 50-round box of 158 grain LRN for $34.00 recently. I passed.

You can always start reloading. Yes there is the up front cost of the equipment, a good reloading manual (read it) and components but you can load whatever you like to shoot and you learn so much more about ammo by making you own. I mostly load 148 gr wadcutters at regular target velocities. A pound of powder goes a long way and the brass will last forever with mild loads. Most press and die companies are offering good rebates for free bullets. Buy a press kit, get 500 free bullets, etc.

I already have an older Dillon, several pounds of old Unique, Bulls eye, and 2400.
A couple thousand small and large pistol primers. Projectiles (Berry's plated) and already re-sized and primed brass. Have been too lazy to go upstairs and pull a handle.
My comment was really about the unavailability of certain ammo staple's.

Sounds like you have a nice setup already. I agree the standard 158 gr loads are hard to come by but try to find some 148 wadcutters. If you do they'll be costly. That's why I started rolling my own.

The time was when gun/sports shops had entire shelves dedicated to .38 Special ammo. Jacketed soft & hollow points from 110-158gr and lead WC , SWC , RN from all the major US brands , as well as several brands of reloads. I remember when ya could buy a box of 50 .38 Special 148gr wadcutter reloads for under $5.
Last box of 148gr WC's I saw were S&B and were $23!

Eaven before this it was tough to find basic 158gr 38spc LRN. All most places had were either 130gr or SD rounds.

38 Special at Walmart
I bought these two boxes today at Walmart. They had about six of them on the shelf, priced at $21.47 plus tax per box of 50.

I've been reloading my own for 30+ years and this last year it has been all but impossible to find primers. Just last week I bought 2 boxes of 1000 at Cabelas for $29.99 a box plus $20 handling fee. still not too bad considering right now Luckgunner.com is selling .38 RNL at $580 per case of a 1000.!! That's more than twice what it cost a year ago.

I went to Cabelas up by Austin, last Tuesday and not a 38. I went back on Friday and bought the last box they had. Seems they put out 30 boxes Friday morning and I hit there at 2PM. However, did buy a brick of 22, so all is not bad.
