Excited found 22 shells at Wally World but....
Finally scored some 22's at Walmart. Bought my 3 box limit of American Eagle 22's which is the only brand they had. Didn't notice till I got home they were a bit light. Discovered they decreased the size of box to 40 round packs. Pay the same and get less just the way the downsized contents we buy at the grocery store. A bit disappointed. I apologize if this info has already been posted. Obviously I didn't get the message.

Federal American Eagle have been in 40 round boxes since last Summer, I found out when I bought a brick to teach a Basic Rifle Class to youth. Disappointed!

I believe the American Eagle copper-plated hollow points have been in 40 round boxes (400 to a carton) for several years now. If you get the plain lead solid point they are still 50 to a box (500 to a carton) unless that has changed recently.

Same thing happened to me. Was at Shooters Outpost in NH. Bought 4 boxes and when I got home noticed they were 40 not 50 rounds. American Eagle brand.

if this is the American Eagle 38 grain copper plated HP, they have been in 40 round packs for at least 5 years. When I was in college and working at my LGS, they had AE LRN in bricks of 500 and AE 38gr CPHP in 400 round bricks. This was around 2008 or so. I would gladly buy the copper plated HPs and be "shorted" the 100 rnds.

The AE have been in 40rd boxes since the late 1980's-early 1990's.

Are they of better quality than the 50 round Federals and Winchesters typically found at Wally's? If not, how do they compete? These are the first I ever purchased.

40 per box seems like the same stupid idea as the 1.5 quart half gallon of ice cream. I am sure the marketing and accounting people did a focus group and said "gee people will think we kept the price the same" as Charlie Brown would say "good grief"

Ive been using AE,Remington 525 and Winchester 555 the last several months and they all seem alike to me .a few duds per hundred but my guns like them just fine. Not as good as CCI-SV,but good enough for plinking and small game.

I haven't got a clue to current production.
Last I bought was quite some time ago (decade or so). They shot just fine, if I remember correctly.
They weren't bad, but I didn't like the looks of them compared to Winchester Super X or Super Speed.
Wasn't much of a savings then either...

Yep --- I bought a case for a friend in 1989 -- was surprised to find there were only 400 rounds in a carton. Kinda soured me on Federal for a bit. At that time, though, Federal had a great reputation for accuracy and I think they figured they could get away with it -- and they did!

I've always thought that AE were more consistent/accurate than the bulk ammo. But not quite as good as WW Power Point. Not sure about the new AE, but I just bought some at Big R (farm supply) so we'll see.
At one time 30 years ago, Federal Lightning, which sold for $5.90-$7.90 per 500, was some of the best plinking ammo I could find. It was 40 grain round nose with no copper wash and very accurate in a wide range of 22 rifles and handguns.

That's also the new Norm.
A pound of coffee is really only 11 oz.
The 3lb can of coffee is only 36 oz now.
My deodorant was 3.2 oz and now it's 3.0 oz.
A 6 oz can of Tuna Fish is only 5 oz.
I'm sure you all have dozens of other examples and the worst part, not only do they make the product smaller, they also raise the price too.
