.22 lr flattening tip question
Noticed a lot of match ammo like eley have partially flattened tips. Wondering what would happen if I ground just the tip down a little on my Cci rn to make a flat spot for matches? Have a lot of them. Any answers?

You would have to have a jig that would allow you to remove the exact same amount of lead every time for consistency. However, a flat tip doesn't automatically make it match ammo. That might increase killing power on small game, but I can't really see any other advantage in doing so.

CCI has a LR loading called the SGB (Small Game Bullet) which has a flat tip. We have had an outbreak of squirrels and rabbits this year which insist on taking my fruit and eating my garden. I have used the aforementioned bullet a good bit this year as well as Hollow Points of the LR and Short varieties. Regarding quick kills, give me a Hollow Point any day.

I have a thing that I bought that was made by "the Hanned Line" if I remember correctly.
It's just a round piece of metal that I put a .22 LR round into and the tip protrudes out and you cut it off with a knife. Works good...if I can find it. Haven't used it in a good while, and likely won't be able to find it again until Armageddon.

Round tips for accuracy...........
but this also depends on the gun, and what it likes.
Sub-sonic HP some times do as good or better.
HP for expansion and quick kills..........
Solids will work but your animals may move around on you a bit.
Good luck with re-doing a 22 tip, if you get into it.

The CCI SGB ammo and it's made to limit meat destruction that HP ammo will cause. If you are only looking for quick kills use a HP bullet. If you're looking for more meat to fill the pot the SGB is a good choice IMO.

You'd have a new hobby and something to do when you favorite team isn't playing.

Bullet shape does effect terminal performance. A good example to explain this is to take and old piece of cloth and stretch it tightly. First sharpen a pencil and quickly ram the pencil thought the tightly stretched cloth. Remove the sharp pencil and inspect the damage. Now take that same pencil and blunt the tip. Now ram this through the same cloth and inspect the damage. You will notice a vastly different "wound" channel, yet the pencil did not change anything but point shape. As another posted mentioned, hollow points are good for fast kills but does meat damage in excess of solids. Flat nosed solids are a good choice when more terminal performance is required with less meat damage that hollow points can provide. I cant imagine an improvement of accuracy though, but I am not a great accuracy buff.
