Winchester makes special runs of the 145gr Silvertip .357 Magnum ammo and they don't do so every year. I waited almost 2 years last time to buy more. I had 1 1/2 boxes left when they did a run and I bought 3 more at the time. (@$50 each) I think that was well over a year ago so I'm sure stocks are running low again and until they make another run, there will be none. I bought mine @ "Ammunition To Go" but when it becomes available again it will be everywhere for a few months and then the long wait starts again! Ammo To Go : Your one stop for all of your ammunition needs!
Sorry for the bad news...

I have a M640 that's scary accurate with that load. I swear that revolver/ammo combination shooter better than I can shoot! It's the only magnum ammo that revolver gets. (too bad I can't practice more with the carry ammo)

The Winchester 145 gr. Silvertip .357 Magnum load was the last .357 Magnum round issued by the U.S. Border Patrol for their use in the BP-1service revolver. It was a S&W Model 686, similar to one used by U.S. Customs called the CS-1. The tolerances were a bit closer than factory specs which caused some problems in the field. Most of the problems were cured when they made some room under the extractor star for unburned powder grains and crude to go so they didn't jam up the cylinder. I carried a 3" barrel CS-1 for several years and had no problems.

Good question, I haven't spotted any for sale in years. I used to buy them as components, not only for .357 but also, 9mm, 40S&W and of course .44 mag. I prefer them for use on leather cartridge belts since they don't corrode.

The last box I saw, about three years ago at the largest LGS here...
I've been looking for some since then with no luck. Come on, Winchester.

FWIW, you might try the shows. I've found 'old' boxes of ammo on the tables of private sellers that are out of print or otherwise unavailable. Picked up some good bargains this way. Never know what you might find.

I sent the following email through their website this morning. I'll post any response I receive.
Does your company have a timeline for the production of 145 gr silvertip ammo in .357 (X357SHP)?
There is a lot of people waiting for it and I, personally, don't want to have to switch to a different ammo as the X357SHP is superior to all others in performance through my revolver.
I will share your response (or non response) with my fellow enthusiasts at http://smith-wessonforum.com/.
Best regards
xxxx

I found a "vintage" box of it this weekend at a big rural flea market type sale. One box of 50 in the original style box for $35. As long as it fires I think I did well.
Added it to my stash of .357 self defense ammo. Tempted to just sit on it and not even test fire some.

How times have changed. The box I have I purchased in the late 90's for $22. I thought that and the $468 (out the door price) I paid for my new 2.5" 686+ was expensive.

Wow, after reading this thread I'm kicking myself! I was in a gun store in Lexington, KY just last week and they had three boxes for I believe $54.99/ea. I knew that it was great ammo and started to buy a box but didn't. If I knew that it would be so hard for me to find in the future I would have.

Sorry guys.
I did receive a response of the canned variety.
It offered no specifics on when the ammo will be produced:
"Answer:
Like many manufacturers in the shooting sports industry, we are experiencing an extremely high demand for our products. We are working as hard as we can to produce an increased supply of quality ammunition to meet our customers’ needs. We appreciate your patience and like always, thank you for choosing Winchester.
Thank you for your feedback and for being a valued Winchester customer.
Sincerely,
Consumer Service Department Winchester Ammunition For additional information on Winchester Ammunition products, please visit our website at Winchester.com."

I miss the Silver Tips too, they were the first heavy (147 gr) 9mm bullets to expand reliably out of my pistols. I think it was the first time the jacket material was changed from copper to something else to help with expansion, now they have others with better jacket designs and plated bullets that work just as well or better.
Now even though I still miss my 147gr Silver Tips, I feel better now that I have the Winchester T series and the Golden Sabers.
