Default Odd 7.62x39 ammo

While going through a can to take to the range I grabbed these. I noticed that they seemed light compared to other AK rounds. They have a strange round nose, AND they weigh a total of 185 grains compared to 255 grains of a typical AK round. They came in these 10 round packages. Any idea what this is?

I've seen them but don't know anything about them. What's the headstamp if any?

IIRC they are E.German short range rounds. I've shot around 60 of these thru my SKS and they functioned fine.

I thought most typical rounds in 7.63x39 were around 125grs or so.
I remember seeing photos of ammo like that in this calibre, but I can't remember where. Will look though some old stuff and see what I can find.

A headstamp of "05" corresponds to "Spreewerke, Lübben, East Germany" per Headstamp Codes - International Ammunition Association

Google shows it being sold the way you describe it on the net. Add in the headstamp I'd say your recollection is dead on. I saw some packaged that way at an auction once but didn't know anything about it.

The weights I gave were the total weight of the whole round, case, bullet, powder, etc. Bullets and case do attract a magnet.

7.62X54R rounds from Czhecloslovacia are very similar and it's short range practice ammo (round nose, white tip bullet). The bullet is hollow and very accurate to about 100 meters. I've shot over a thousand rounds of the 7.62x54R in my Mosin Nagants and had no issues whatever YMMV.

Poordevil, I might agree except for the magnet test. Thanks to everyone for the responses. I've been planning to make a range trip for a couple days but something always gets in the way. Tomorrow is a go though. Will report.

They use a plastic core with steel jacket. That's why they attract a magnet.

Default Range Report

Shot this stuff indoors at 25 yards. Very low recoil, quiet, and very accurate. It groups very well but hits 1" low at 25 yards. Does it have any collector value?

Yes, steel jacket with plastic core. It was made to be a cheap practice alternative. Many shooters have no idea what it is. I almost got into an argument at a gun show recently with a know it all ammo seller who insisted they are blanks. I don't think the collector value is very high. Yet.
