S&W 38+P, What is it?
Not a great picture, but I'm wondering what this is. Black coated HP marked S&W 38 spcl+P. Looks like a SWC.

That looks like the classic Nyclad ammo from what I can see in the picture.
(love that stuff!)

Nyclad = Lead bullet coated w/nylon instead of a wax lube.

An interesting concept, but after Federal bought out the rights, they let it die off . Apearently they felt it would be too closely competing with their then new HydraShok.
The 125gr non +P has such a cult following , that it has been brought back for periodic production runs. This load origional known as "Chief's Special" is generally considered to the THE non +P load.

The word was that the nylon coating process led to a lot of rejected bullets (partial or uneven coating) and not cost effective for the limited amount of sales. The process was re-evaluated when copper prices spiked a few years ago.
I saw a 50rd box of 125gr +P hollowpoints at a gunshow last week for $35. Shoulda grabbed it but I already spent my allowance.

S&W was the original Nyclad ammo distributor. S&W sold the rights to Federal when they stopped marketing ammo under the S&W brand.
