Default Identify .38 Special round

Any idea what this is. It sounds like there are small ball bearings inside the round instead of a solid projectile. Is it some sort of modern snake/rat shot? The case is nickel and the cap is plastic.

A shot shell would be my guess as well. What kind of head stamp is on it?

I'll have to check when I get home. I think it was an R-P.

Edit: Its definitely some sort of shot shell. I was pretty sure only CCI made factory .38 special shot shells, so these must be reloads.

It's a shotgun round. The #9 shot is enclosed in a capsule that falls away as the load exits the barrel.

Looks like a Speer shot capsule. I have loaded them in the past. At close range the plastic shards do considerable damage as well as the shot.

Thanks for the help.

My recollection is that Speer hasn't used the yellow shot capsules since the late 1960s or early 1970s. Like the factory loads shown they have been clear blue for a long time! The ones I was loading in the early 1970s were already the blue ones, with a yellow wad.

I picked up a .30 cal can full of an eclectic mix of loose ammo; .38 Long Colt, .38 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .45 rat shot, etc... you name it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Speer loads are from the 60's or early 70's.

I bought some capsules to load on a whim but don't want to buy $40 worth of #9 when all I need is a spoonful.

Default shot shells

I used #7 shot that I had left over from leading my boat anchor. Easy to load and effective to about 10' or so...38/357. Load data included with capsules.
