Default 22 wmr becoming obsolete?

From time to time, I have considered buying a 22 magnum rimfire revolver (like a M48) or a rifle.

But I just can't see it.

22 wmr is becoming almost impossible to find.

And when you do find it, the price has gone up higher than bulk 9mm or 38 special practice rounds.

There isn't much a 22 wmr can do that a 38 special can't.

In fact, there isn't much a 22 wmr can do that a 22 lr can't do either.

Plus you can reload 38 special or 9 mm.

So has 22 wmr priced itself out of a market?

My personal opinion, there is not really a lot of difference between a 22 mag and the 22 LR in its high speed loadings, out of a short barreled revolver.

Out of a rifle length barrel, it is a whole different animal, adding notable range and killing power compared to a 22 LR. The 22 mag / 38 spl comparison is apples to oranges, at least out of a rifle.

Ammo availability and price varies, but, at least around here, finding 22 mag ammo is not a problem, and is cheaper and more available than 38 spl.

But for handgun use, the 38 spl. is probably a better all around choice, and definitely cheaper if you reload.

Around here WMR is a gold filling from a hens front tooth.

While liking the ballistics of the 57 I've been scared off by the price of everything associated with it.

I've stumbled upon the 22TCM that uses the same bullets and brass as a 223. Cut the brass down and neck it down and you have the 22TCM. To me it's the perfect SHTF round and if someone made a wheel gun for here could be a wonderful EDC option.

You can get dies for it so to me it's not a wildcat round any more.

The 22 magnum has had that red headed step child syndrome for as long as I can remember but never really goes away. It was considered hard to find and expensive 40 years ago. I would be surprised to see it become obsolete anytime soon.

I think the .22 magnum has enough mystique and real performance to keep it alive for quite awhile, with no danger of it becoming obsolete. It has had some serious competition with all the newer 17's, but still has enough going for it, and there is still a bunch of guns out there so chambered.

After reading Fishnfool's post I looked up some ballistic tables for 22 WMR and 22LR.

He was right, 22 WMR is nearly the same as 22 LR from a snubbie, but from a rifle has a lot higher muzzle energy.

To make real use of 22 WMR you need at least a long barrel revolver or a rifle.

Which is why I like it. It's a great farm rifle. Won't go to the next county like a centerfire, and does a better job than a .22LR.

I have a 22 magnum cylinder for my Heritage Rough Rider-I bought a box of 22mag and have shot probably a dozen rounds of it.

I bought that particular gun as a fun and cheap to shoot range gun. 22 magnum ammo is a lot louder and more expensive, and doesn't punch paper any better than 22LR. So, for that reason, I don't expect to shoot a lot of it.

At least around here, 22mag(along with 17hmr) has been available on and off throughout the panic. It's been easier to find than any common handgun ammo. The price is around $15/50, or about the same as 9mm.

22 wmr rifle makes an excellent rabbit or small game round with more range than a 22 lr.

50 years ago my favorite jack rabbit gun in the southern California desert was a Savage 24 with a .22 magnum over a 20 ga shotgun. I would take a first shot with the shotgun, and if I missed, the rabbits would run about 75-100 yards and then stop and stare at you. I would then switch to the hot little .22 magnum and more often then not, drop them. On those kind of shots, there is not comparison with a regular .22. I also have a 6" M48, and enjoy shooting it, but there is less advantage with it compared to a rifle.

I'm a fan of the 22 WMR and don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. Ruger, Marlin, Savage, and others have all recently released some current 22 mag bolt action rifles which have a great following. My current favorite which is a 22 mag Henry Golden Boy is amazingly accurate and took me 6 months to track one down. Every time they show up in shops, they sell quickly-so I know for a fact there is still a demand out there for the 22 WMR.

I find the 22 mag to be a perfect caliber for squirrel, rabbit, beaver, and raccoon hunting. You'd ruin too much meat taking them out with a 38 spl or anything larger.

I always hear complaints about how expensive it is. I've never understood that argument. Does it come from someone who has only shot 22 LR? If so, I guess yes it can be expensive. But I buy a box of Winchester Super X, 50 rounds for $10.99 at Walmart and even with the panic I've not had trouble finding it. And 22 mag far outsells 17 hmr in my area. It's several dollars cheaper than 9mm. I own two 9mm pistols and don't reload that caliber so for me it's a non issue about saving brass.

And as far as we can tell, all the major manufacturers (Hornady, Remington, CCI, Winchester) are still making it and continue to take the 22 mag to new levels, especially now with the popularity of people carrying 7 and 8 shot snubs like the S&W 351 or the Ruger LCR. Hornady makes a really nice 22 mag hallow point specifically for these snub nose revolvers. http://www.hornady.com/store/22-WMR-...tical-Defense/

And CCI makes a 22 mag HP+V that's rated at 2,200 fps. I have yet to see a 22 LR reach that. http://www.cci-ammunition.com/produc...=1&loadNo=0059

I love the .22 WMR in my 25" CZ 452 Lux. It's my favorite long gun.
Obsolete? Impossible, I have a basement full of it.

Quote:

In a handgun that's true. Why people choose it as a handgun round I'll never understand.
But in a rifle it's juuust right. More range and power than .22lr, less noise and cost compared to .223.

You can back order it at Midway now. Fiocchi (good stuff), is only $8/50, far cheaper than centerfire.
Premium stuff is more, but that's true of any ammo.

As long as NAA keeps making mini-revolvers in 22Mag,
there'll be a market for the ammo. Loud is okay....

I had that gun, I also had the 22lr/410, best rabbit guns I ever had, sorry I got rid of both of them.

Savage has re-issued the 22 over 410 double barrel single shot. Now listed as Model 42.

There are 410/22lr and 410/22wmr versions.

I feel the exact opposite. There seems to be more guns and ammo available in .22 WMR than ever before. Years ago , there was only 2-3 ammo makers (Win/Fed/CCI) and they offered the same 2 loads , FMJ or JHP. Now even Remington makes it , and there's a few imports.

I agree with you mkk41. And don't anybody forget that sweet and very hard to get Kel-Tec 30 round .22 mag. auto that sold for over double retail through it's first year of production.

While flirting with 22WMR, I've ended up with an AMT Automag II and a Mossberg Chuckster bolt action rifle. 22WMR certainly has its place. The Automag is a flame thrower that suffers from FTF failures, mostly due to the long, narrow case. Lots of fun to shoot, makes lots of noise and flash. Fun at the range.

The Chuckster has a 26" barrel or something and while it is a basic, if not rudimentary machine, it shoots well. 22WMR ammo seems pretty notorious for lack of accuracy through the testing that I have done.

And while the Keltec PMR 30, Grendel and other 22WMR pistols look "fun", I can't see getting into anything of the like unless looking for a range toy/vault piece. I've nearly bought various 22WMR snub nose revolvers only to check myself. The 22LR snubbie does just as well without the excess decibel and flash release.

i think there are enough modern guns chambered in 22mag to keep the round in production for a long time to come
ive needed a 22 mag for a while, i picked up a m17 that included a 22 mag cylinder so i picked up a box of cci maxi-mag jhp .when i got home i posted my new purchase and everyone advised me NOT to use the mag cylinder .
so ive had this box of 22 mag sitting here all this time with no purpose for it.
so i just bought a naa earl in 22 mag comes with 22lr cylinder .be here in a week or so. ill probably shoot a box through it and trade for s&w stock ...or keep it forever ,i get sentimental sometimes haha

I love .22 mag in a rifle. Not so much in a revolver. It fills the gap between .22lr and .17hmr IMO.Try shooting a .17 with any wind and you know what I mean.Nice energy as well.I wouldn't want to get hit with one.

As one poster pointed out, the WMR is gaining new popularity as a cartridge for small SD handguns. New loads have been produced, aimed specifically at short barrel handguns. The American Rifleman magazine did a feature this year on this subject, including ballistics tables.

In my own shooting, I have found the original WW and CCI loadings, the 40 gr JHP and 40 gr solid, to be the best in small handguns, including the old High Standard Derringer and the NAA revolvers. I experienced keyhole-ing with the Hornady Critical Defense load at short 10 ft. range, so testing with any load is indicated.

I have a Keltec PMR-30 .22WMR. It's a 30rd double stack mag. that sprays quicker than a cornered skunk. When I saw how quick I was going through ammo I bought a Heritage revolver in .22LR/.22MAG. The semi was also too finicky in what fed through it consistently. With the revolver I have more options available to feed it and it doesn't gulp it down as fast.

The first handgun I owned was a Ruger convertable 22/22 mag in the '60's.

I bought it, like most, because of the ballistic table numbers for the 22 mag.

I learned from experience that the 22 mag would do nothing in a handgun that 22 lr standard velocity wouldn't do, except make noise and cost more.

First handgun I ever sold - no regrets in the subsequent 40+ years.

Seems like folks are still buying 22 mag handguns because the ballistic tables show wonderful numbers.

I wouldn't own one or recommend one for anything a handgun is used for.

Might be helpful in a rifle, but that's a different application.

Lots of manufacturers are coming up with 'gee whiz' ammo for 22 mag now that CCW is a big market.

The ballistic tables are still lovely, ( wonderful to read on the throne) but the performance in a handgun still unremarkable but the ammo prices are much higher.

If you want a 22 handgun, get one chambered for 22 lr and learn to shoot it.

Just my opinion, of course.

I agree

In exploring around on the Internet, I've found descriptions of ballistic gel tests with results for 22LR very similar to the tests in the American Rifleman article posted above.

It figures, because from a handgun 22LR develops about the same velocity for similar weight bullets.

While I've owned 22 mag handguns they've tended to come and go but I've had 22mag rifles around for a LONG time. It's just too usefull for pest control where I live. Given the shortage of 22 mag ammo in my area this year I did buy a 17 HRM this year. I have identical rifles with identical scope set ups, one in 17 HRM and one in 22 Mag because I liked the configuration so much i wanted to double my chance of finding ammo.

Default BLASPHEMY

It sounds like the OP has never owned a 22wmr rifle. My Ruger 7722mag bolt all weather is my most accurate RIFLE at 50-75 yards and has taken game from squirrels to coytres & hogs, with virtually zero recoil, and a worked trigger/action as good as my rem 40xb. TRY ONE, then tell me it's obsolete. I can hit golf balls easy at 100 yds with it, my bud then hit's the tees. Try that with a 22lr.

DF... If you use Winchester Black box Supreme bullets with that AutoMag I think You'll find the FTF goes away.

Call me a sentimental fool with my several m48s and my Marlin 980 microgroove.

I have one of those, too.

My ranch rifle is a Marlin 1894M Lever Action .22 magnum. My faviorite rifle and caliber for day in and day out shoot'n anything that needs shoot'n. No problem getting cartridges for it here in the Sunshine State. I have a friend that swears by the .17 and says it is better.

.22 Mag is one of my all time favorite rifle rounds. I have ZERO accuracy problems. We start out shooting clays @ 100yards and end up shooting the pieces until we can no longer see them anymore. Id say that is good enough for ME.
