S & W 38 Special Ammo
I am looking for specs on some 38 Spc. ammo I have had since the late 70's or early 80's. The box is labeled "S&W/38 Special" It is 125 gr. JHP with a part number of S38HP2. On the back is
"Smith & Wesson-Fiocchi. Inc., Alton, Ill. Would like to use in light frame 2" . Thanks for any help you can give me.

I can't see any reason you couldn't use it. Alton? That's Winchester's location, I think.

I just shot up a box of the identical S&W (Fiocchi) load about 2 weeks ago. They all went bang and while I did not bother to Chronograph them they seemed a bit hot for NON +P 38 Specials. This was just an odd box of ammo I had inherited from my Dad and since I had no intention on using them for SD loads, I just shot them out from my 6" M19. I never cared much for light 38 Special bullets.

Your S&W ammo is at least 30+ years old. It should be perfectly shootable ammo but I'd nix any thoughts of using it for SD purposes.

I remember the .38 Special S&W/Fiocchi loads from that period. Some of the earlier rounds did not have the +P stamp as that designation had not yet been formally arrived at. These rounds were loaded with a what seemed to be a heavy charge of slow burning powder, with many unburned granules falling from fired casings, even in the 4" bbls I fired them from.

If I remember correctly, some 30 to 35 years ago Smith and Wesson marketed ammunition and your appears to be from that era. I think it was contracted with a certain or possibly a few ammo manufacturers, of which "Fiocchi" was one. I am not certain of who were all the manufacturers that produced this ammo. It was good for the time, but quickly faded from use and production. It should be ok to to use in most revolvers by firearms makers of good reputation. It was relatively inexpensive as to cost but not necessarily quality. You could shoot it safely for the most part or possibly find a collector who would be interested for it's historical value. Hope this helps.
