Exclamation Winchester M-22 Recall Notice

http://www.winchester.com/library/ne...rt-recall.aspx

Winchester M-22
Symbol Number: S22LRT
Lot Numbers: GD42L and GD52L

Winchester has determined the above lots of 22 Long Rifle rimfire ammunition may contain double powder charges. Ammunition with double powder charges may subject the shooter or bystanders to a risk of serious personal injury and/or death, or cause firearm damage, rendering the firearm inoperable.

Thank you for the heads-up! I have 3 boxes of the stuff in the basement I'm going to have to check before shooting! Thanks again...

Update:
I checked my ammo and while the Symbol Numbers are the same as the recall none of the Lot Numbers are the same so my the ammo is safe. Thanks again!

Thanks for the heads up. I have two boxes that were purchased from Cabela's last July that are lot # 2GD52L.

I'm not sure if they're part of the recall, but it sounds like they might be. This is from the notice:
Quote:
If it is Symbol Number S22LRT with a Lot Number containing GD42L or GD52L immediately discontinue use and contact Winchester...
I have a call in to Winchester and will report back.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Added 11:30am

Bad news, good news...

I just got off the phone with Olin Corp. and my ammo (lot # 2GD52L) is part of the recall.

They're having UPS deliver a return label to my home tomorrow and pick up the ammo. I won't need to take it to a UPS hub.

They offered a refund or replacement and I chose the replacement. I need to provide them some information by email so they can ship the replacement ammo to my home, but I was told to expect it in about a week and a half.

Thanks again for posting this warning. It's a bit of a hassle, but it would be a lot worse if I was injured or damaged one of my guns shooting the stuff. .22's are small, but they generate around 20,000 PSI and a potential double charge is nothing to take lightly.

I didn't even know you could double charge a .22LR case.

I know it sounds a little strange but I read that most 22 ammo only contains about one grain of fast burning powder. If that is the case I guess it's possible.

From the Winchester Web Site:

"DO NOT USE WINCHESTER® M*22™ 22 Long Rifle RIMFIRE AMMUNITION WITH LOT NUMBERS GD42L or GD52L. The ammunition Lot Number is imprinted (stamped without ink) on the left tuck flap of the 500-round carton as indicated here. The 1000-round intermediate carton does not have a Lot Number.

To determine if your ammunition is subject to this notice, review the Symbol Number and Lot Number. If it is Symbol Number S22LRT with a Lot Number containing GD42L or GD52L immediately discontinue use and contact Winchester toll-free at 866-423-5224 or visit http://www.winchester.com/Product-Se...ontact-Us.aspx for free UPS pick-up of the recalled ammunition."

Does this mean the 1000 round box is not affected, or that there are two 500 round boxes with a lot number inside, or does it mean that there is no way of knowing if it is affected or not?

The 1000 round packaging is just an outer box that holds two smaller 500 round boxes. Each 500 round box has lot numbers on the flap.

Thanks I'll need to check my boxes. I'm quite attached to my 15-22 and I prefer it not spontaneously disassemble itself in my face.

They should throw in an extra box for the emotional trauma of having to separate myself from 3k of my ammo and wait for a replacement... No? it was worth a shot.

Anyone know the approximate production time of those lot #'s? I only have 1k from mid 2013 the rest was vintage 2012.

I just checked my recent production and it's a different lot number. I believe the affected lots are much earlier so check yours to be sure. When you open the box the lot number is on the front left tab.

((Edited because my reply is Nr 13 in another thread of the same name-which is located in the Lounge.)), I was asking if these were the only types of winchester 22 being recalled? Reason being is that I would like to inform my Nephews of it so they can check the 1,800 rounds I gave them as part of their Christmas gifts?

Does this recall mean ammo in bulk packs? or can it be in 50 rd and 300++ round boxes?

Edited: because I found the answer--not to the ammo recall but to another question.

I saw your original post because I posted some additional info just before it. My post is gone as well, along with a couple likes I added in the thread.

Looks like my 2000 rounds are ok! I found the number, unlike the damn thunderbolts. Never did see the number on box for that recall.

I had one rupture in my 617. It was a box of 333 from Cabela's in the presentation wooden box. No harm but it was different. Don't have the old box to check lot numbers and am half way through the next box without any problems.

This is why one should always store/keep their ammo in the original box/packaging if at all possible. So you can identify lot numbers in case of recalls like this one.

Thank you for posting this! I have five boxes of this ammo and fortunately for me, none of mine match the recalled lot numbers.

I guess Winchester/Olin could always repackage it as .22LR +P.

Just finished my second box of Winchester 333 from Cabela's. Had eight more cases rupture in my 617. All but two were in different chambers. Don't think they were double charged, appears to be more of a issue of defective brass. In my MP22 the recoil was noticably different for some rounds but never noticed a ruptured case.
The lot numbers on the second box read E128310 ---RCLR94----K7526.
Don't have the numbers from the first box.

Default Here's a "loaded" question...

I bought 2,000 rounds from Cabela's last year, that are marked with the recalled lot numbers. What do you think they will offer when I call tomorrow and tell them I live in NY?
Think 'replacement' will be an option?

Remington had a recall on the Thunderbolts awhile back, but considering the quality problems I've found with the Goldens, I'm surprised they weren't recalled as well.

Poor crimps, as bad or worse than any of the Thunderbolts I've seen, to the point where you could easily pull the bullet out of the case with your fingers, and leading to feeding problems because the bullets wouldn't stay straight.

A high percentage of bad primmer failures.

Both low and high powder charges.

Ruptured cases, probably from some of those high charges.

These issues were found to varying degrees between different lots and bulk packages. For example, the crimps were a bit better in some packages, but none were what I would call good.

Yes, I reported this to Remington along with the lot number of the worst offenders. I've received no response at all.

The only good thing was that they were somewhat more available, at least for awhile, and noticeably better than the Thunderbolts.
