Winchester has recalled some 22 LR ammo - Double charged.
Maybe save it for your Contender

The chamber on my Mark II and III is surrounded by at least 1/4" of steel. Can a .22 make that much pressure to damage a chamber like that?

I dunno, but I wouldn't want to take the chance of the bolt slamming back into my pretty face.

The bolt will hold :-) but those bits of brass and hot gasses could be interesting

According to SAAMI, the maximum recommended chamber pressure for a .22 Long Rifle is 24,000 psi. Powder quantity/pressure isn't linear, but a double charge could conceivably create pressures higher than a .357 Magnum. Definitely not good in a simple blowback action firing a case with a hollow head.

The good news is that Winchester will replace the ammunition if you don't want a refund.
