Default Win 230 grain hollowpoints

Well while wandering around at wally world I cruised past the ammo counter, I asked the lady if the box was 45acp 230grain hollow points. Darn cataracts couldn't read the label. She says yes it is. So I said I'll take it. 1st box I have seen in stock in over a year. My wife God bless her spotted the bag right off. And told her it was the 1st box of hollow points I've seen there in over a year. Thinking its about time I bought a lottery ticket. As a matter of fact I've been cruising two wally worlds and neither have had that ammo in over a year. Still doling out the ammo 3 bxs a customer and when I asked about 22rf ammo she started laughing. So I guess the gremlins are still getting up at 5am to see what the truck left for them. Frank

Walmart has been a ammo desert for me for about a year. Reports of people finding ammo in such local stores are heartening. But other than some Fed. Auto Match that turned up in Feb. 2013, there has been nothing at Walmart or any local LGS.

The Win. 230 gr. JHP's have worked well in my 1911 and 625-2. POI has been POA as with common 230 gr. FMJ's. Expansion in watermelons has been very positive at about 10 yds. Any closer and you end up getting sprayed with pulverized watermelon. Have to pay attention to the wind or the spray will leave your cloths all sticky. :-).

My local Walmart has had .40 S&W on the shelf continually through the shortage. The WWWB HP has been available more often than not. I suspect that it is because the HP ammo is more of a midrange priced ammo than cheap blasting stuff.

FWIW, it is great self defense ammo. Even if it doesn't expand, it's still .45 caliber.

All through last year my local Wally always had .40, most often it was the only handgun caliber they had. Was there 2 days ago they had some .45 and 3 full shelves of .40. When you looked the shelf label f0r .38, .357, .44, .380 or whatever, that shelf space was filled with .40. Well over 100 boxes of it.

The Win. 230 gr.JHP load is about the ONLY handgun ammo my Walmart has had on a consistent basis during the drought. In rifle ammo it's been --get ready! -- .223!

Here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia finding ammo in the Wally Worlds is hit or miss. My local store in Mountain View currently has both 223 and 5.56, some 243 and 270 etc. They also have some 40 S&W. I have on occasion found Federal 9mm and Federal 45acp. (I prefer the Winchester White box, but at this point you gotta' take what you can get...up to a point.) They seem to have adequate amounts of 12 and 20 ga shells.

.38 and .357 ammo has been extremely rare and .22 LR is simply a memory.

I visited a friend in Elk Grove and picked up a 100 round box of .38, 125 +P. Gilroy and Salinas recently had American Eagle bulk packs of 5.56 in both 62 gr (M855/SS109) and 55 gr (FMJ, M193).

The bottom line is that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to what ammo is stocked in which stores. When you see something that you can use, you should buy it!

It almost enough to get you to "roll your own". Of course buying bullets, primers and powder is another set of challenges...
