Default Any value for .38 and .357 brass?

My son and I just counted our brass and came up with 700+ 38 special and 500+.357

We have probably thrown out 3 times that not thinking anyone would want them.

So, is this enough to bother trying to sell or should we just trash it?

Any idea what the going rate is?

No idea on current value but it's definitely worth something. Even giving it away free beats throwing it in the trash.

Did some Googling and this site is selling .38 for $13.35 for a hundred and .357 for $14.86 for a hundred. .357 Magnum Brass Cases

More than I thought....

That's kinda crazy and if I sell it I obviously won't ask those prices...

Cleaned 38 special cases sell for about 40 dollars per 500 count bag, so figure on 8 cents per case for once fired and cleaned in a vibratory bowl. If you don't bother with cleaning the brass drop your price to a nickel a case.

For the 357 Magnum brass the value is much higher at present. While it seems a bit high the local brass dealers are asking for 25 dollars for a 100 count bag of cleaned once fired 357 magnum cases. The reason for the high costs is because 357 magnum cases are basically unobtainable right now. Starline brass opened up the back order option on 357 Magnum cases and it only took them 2 days to totally sell out a run scheduled for January 24. If you don't want to clean the cases drop your price to 15 cents per case and you'll sell them in an eye blink.

BTW, post your brass up on the For Sale/Accessories sub forum and keep them "in the family".

That's well over $100 you'd be throwing away there.

I wouldn't sell them, but instead, get some reloading equipment.

You already have the most expensive part of reloaded ammo; the cases.

I'd say they are worthless ...

PM your address and I will send a prepaid shipping container for your easy disposal to me

In my area .38's once fired are about $.08-.10 and .357 around $.20-.25.

My wife and I started a Non-Profit Nursery School in Rockville, MD 36 years ago. It is known as The Children's Learning Center. The children make holiday candle holders from .38 and .357 brass. We polish the pieces and I pull the primers and the teachers will screw the brass to a paint-stick and the children make plaster-of-paris shapes on the base and then paint them for their families. Years ago, we required nearly 3000 pieces each year, but enrollment is down and the police no longer use .38 and .357 brass (which they donated to the school). If you are willing to donate them, we will send you a letter and you can determine the value for tax purposes. We are a tax deductible charity listed with United Way and a member of the Federal Combined Campaign.
If you donate them… Send to:

Well I posted them in the For Sale section... tried to be fair and asked 17 cents for the .357 and 6.5 cents for the .38 special plus shipping. Will see what happens, I can adjust the price if there is no interest at this price.

I have probably thrown out hundreds of dollars in brass over the years. I had no idea they had any significant value LOL.

Thanks for the info guys!!

I found it easier just to visit the local recycling center. Just this week I dropped off almost 100 pounds of brass cases and was paid almost $2 a pound. Sorting, trying to sell, shipping, its all a PITA anymore. Just take it and sell it to a scrap dealer.

I have no idea what my brass is worth, but even though I don't reload, I always save it. Thankfully I mostly shoot revolver but if I shoot an auto, I still bend over and pick it up. I always figured brass is a metal and is worth something even if just scrap. I have thousands of cases of .45acp and 9mm. Not sure if they're worth the same as the .38 or .357, but maybe it's about time to think about selling some of it off. Or, trading for the elusive .22lr that I can't seem to find anywhere.

If you want to have some cheap fun, put all you can in a small flat rate USPS box ($5.80) and hold a drawing in the reloading forum. Called a "Karma" drawing, it costs you less than $6, probably will get 50 entries, and supposedly brings good luck!

I've done it several times and it is a great time for everyone involved.

Default Right now I'm sorry....

Right now I'm sorry that I ever threw ANY reloading component away. Before, it was 'I can get more of that anytime I want". but that's before and this is now.

Put your .357 up for sale and I'll bet someone (most likely me) will buy it. PM me if interested.

I too have noticed 357 brass is few and far between. I haven't found any at formal or informal ranges in years and I rarely see it for sale on multiple forums.

I don't know if new brass is available and reasonable or not.

Well all metals are worth something. Anyone check.the price of gold lately? Don't throw away anything that is copper, steel, nickel, brass. If you don't reload you can still get some cash by the pound by taking it to a scrapyard. The prices fluctuate based on the market. I had heard about a couple here in the Carolinas that were buying used brass bed frames on craigslist (nobody wants these heavy brass frames anymore), and then taking them to the scrapyards and cashing for more than what they paid. Word got out and more people started doing the same thing until it became harder to find the frames... you get my point.

Never scrap or throw any brass away. It is too hard to come by now.
