Default 22 short black powder for S&W Model 1

I have a Model 1 3rd issue in perfect working order that has been in my family since it was new. I recently learned (from this S&W forum) that it shoots 22 short black powder ammunition and I don't have a clue as to where I might find some, or even if it is still made. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Simply, you are not going to find Black Powder .22 Short ammunition. None has been loaded since probably before 1920. What you can shoot in this gun, assuming it is in very good condition, including the barrel still latching snugly, is some RWS either BB or CB Cap ammunition. Now matter how bad you want to shoot it do not try to use modern .22 Short from any manufacturer. Both Remington and CCI make .22 Short CB Caps, but they are really not suitable for the Model 1, regardless of which issue number.

I have shot CCI 22 CB Shorts in several Model 1s and they function fine. This ammo actually has lower velocity than 22 Short BP, so should not be a problem. As Alk8944 states, standard 22 Shorts should not be shot, since many exceed 800 fps. Bottom line is these revolvers should be shot sparingly, since no parts are available and it is not worth breaking something and rendering these collector pieces non-functional.
