Therefore the prudent person that shoots surplus Russian ammunition or other Russian made ammunition must assess the situation for themselves and act accordingly. If that means buying more to have on hand then do so.

If one feels nothing will happen thats OK too but stay abreast of the news just in-case you have to whip that plastic out and make a last minute purchase.
I'm not ignoring that possibility at all. What I am ignoring is all the fear-mongering from the rumor mill that has already concluded Russian ammo will no longer be available, thus inciting some folks into a frothing panic. During the post-12/2012 ammo shortage, Russian 7.62x39 became scarce, and spiked from a case price of $249 to a high of $350. At the same time, .223 spiked from a case price of $399 to $1,000. When there was no ammo to be found, Russian x39 never approached the % price increase of domestic .223. If we experience another shortage, the smart move will be to wait it out until prices stabilize and supply catches up to normal levels. Putin isn't going to spite himself in the long term by giving up the cash crop.

I just wish for those days when I could walk in and buy ammo on the way to the range or order what I needed from online retailers but those days are gone and I doubt they will return anytime soon. The result is we have to have a plan in place to deal with the many possible outcomes that may impact our hobby. It does subtract from the fun one gets from spending time at the range or hunting. Dang shame that we are in this situation.

The Russians have dedicated all ammo production to the upcoming invasion of Eastern Europe in support of Putin's plan to rebuild the former USSR. Therefore, all private sales of Soviet Bloc ammo, in any caliber, has been cancelled. I saw this on "Hardball with Chris Matthews" so it has to be written in stone. Fear not! I am here to help. I will be willing to sacrifice my modest 500 round supply of 7.62X39 to the first forum member with a pre war, mint, model 27 in original box who is willing to trade. Send me a PM before you miss out on this ammo which will never be available again in our life time. Oh, I forgot to mention that I will only entertain a trade for a 3.5" barrel model. I know I will be taking a bath on this, but it's all about helping others!

So I went to the gun shop today and heard this. The Russian 7N6 5.45x39 has been banned because someone made a pistol that fires this round therefore the ammo is illegal. Just passing this on.

I see a LOT of russian ammo at Walmart, Gander mountain and LGS.

Saiga AK imports are common as well.

If sanctions go into place this could ALL dry up, and you know Obama would LOVE to ban some kind of gun importation!

Most likely true because it is steel core and some other postings regarding BATFE responses on other sites.

Making 5.45 pistols is nothing new. A few companies have been doing this for a number of years. What got it banned was one company, maybe more, filed paperwork to import 5.45 pistols.

Yes its still available. It's just illegal to import the ammo but it isn't confiscated. There are still warehouses of it....at a higher price now, of course. The only banned thing was surplus 7N6 5.45x39 ammo.

Regadless of how the Schuylkill punch tastes you can't make vodka out of corn. Just like you can't make tequila out of wheat or corn. Or make whiskey out of wheat or potatoes. What the guy made is basically good quality un aged whiskey. It doesn't matter what you make, every liquor is going to start off clear. Color and the unique taste come from aging in wood. I guarantee that if you let that Titos sit in an oak barrel for 5 years it will be not bad whiskey. Otherwise you might as well call tequila blanco vodka as well

On topic, I'm not sure what some of the impacts discussed here mean and/or the reality of many

SECOND -

Perhaps we need a new thread for the Vodka discussion. I'm not trying to hijack nor get into a my dog is bigger here Are you a "potato" purist? And again, not being a smart ...!!!!!! I'll look for you to start a new thread if you'd like to continue

Here's some definitions. Technically, all clear distillates are Vodka! Take a review of many of the leading Vodkas and the source of sugars for alcohol.

It was posted on the guy's (James Yeager) Facebook page. It has since been taken down. However AIM Surplus, Copes distributing, SG AMMO have all confirmed this

If it was a joke it would need a full cooperation of all vendors and importers. You most likely won't find much on their website. This isn't world breaking news. A letter was sent out to importers of denial of form 6 (import form). Like I said all major retailers have already confirmed their phone calls to the ATF. Call one tomorrow and ask

I can still remember when .22lr was plentiful. And then one day we all woke up and it was gone. It's funny to me because im sure i have enough to last me through the next election and 2 more terms. But it sure did upset those who always thought the could walk in the store and find it anytime they wanted.

I surely would hate to see that happen to the Russian Ammo. Because its fun and cheap to shoot when the other dummies are out buying high price .22lr

I can't accept even that since there is nothing on the ATF's website in regards to this.

Ok. A dozen distributors got together to loose money and play April fools. Know how wound up people are this joke would cost them dearly. Call ATF .

This is what I was able to find. I can't find the whole letter

Look the government doesn't take a dump without filling out reams of forms before heading out to the bathroom. Show me a link to an ATF publication on the ATF's site and I will believe it. Until then I consider it an April Fools joke.

Cabela's still has 7.62 x 39 on the shelf, but it isn't on sale for $4.99 a box anymore.

I wish this was a bad joke too, but it's not.

That letter is just what I could find. There is a full one but I would have to go back and read nearly a 100 pages of posts on another 3-4 forums that I'm on to find to full one for you. As of now the IMPORT branch of the ATF has confirmed that 7N6 is currently banned for form 6 transfers (import).

If you go to ARFCOM there is a post by several vendors (Copes Distributing, AIM and a few others) who are currently trying to file a law suit against the ATF

There is also the case of Leonard Embody. He is a Tennessee FFL/SOT who got in some serious trouble a few years ago for painting his AK pistol orange, like a toy gun, and open carried it in public. He was ridiculed by gun owners and swor last year to get 5.45 banned. He applied for a 5.45 AK pistol build and to import as well. He's the guy on gunbroker currently selling surplus tins for $10K ea. With the description of "BANNED BECAUSE I SAID SO". Last week he went on Tenn gun forum and said "for my next trick I'm going to ban 7.62x54

Why pay GunBroker pirates?
Different ammo. Same caliber but not same ammo. The surplus, the one we are talking about is the real deal, true military ammo and functions as should. Wolf is underpowered by at least 400 fps and just punches small holes. The difference would be like comparing 5.56 fmj and 5.56hp/SD/hunting ammo.
