Default Unexpected Windfall

A friend and former co-worker of my wife recently lost her husband to heart issues. She called my wife last week and asked her if I knew anything about lawn mowers as he had taken theirs apart at the end of last year to do some repairs and passed away before he got it put back together. Her money is tight and she was afraid to trust just anybody.I told her I would give it a look and if I could fix it I would.A real challenge putting something back together that someone else took apart.Picked the mower up along with 2 coffee cans of parts and a zip lock bag with more parts.Well I spread everything out on the work bench and studied some.About 2 hours later I had a running mower.Told the wife to call her and tell her it was fixed. The lady is a real sweetheart,a very nice human being. My wife said "She is going to try to pay you".I said I don't want any money. She's a nice lady and needs help. Her husband was a retired police officer whom I had met a couple of times and was a very intelligent man although very opinionated and loved debate. In addition to being law enforcement he was an accomplished musician and pilot. He made a real impression on me,wish I'd have gotten to know him better.Took the mower to her and what you see pictured here is what she gave me saying she had no use for any of it and it was old and didn't know if it was any good.I told her I would gladly pay for all that ammo as it doesn't really go bad.At any rate that didn't work and I think I owe her quite a few more mower repairs.I told her what it could be worth and she didn't really care, said she would have to dispose of it if I didn't take it.You guys are looking at 1450 rounds of .22 and 550 rounds of .357.I still feel guilty about taking it but she would not be argued with.I guess from her standpoint with very little money and a lot of pride it's kinda' like barter.I still owe her.

Good call sir.

Just curious (I'm not old ammo savvy) but about how old would that ammo be?

If you shoot that .357 lead magnum stuff, it will lead your barrel, as the lead was soft back in the older green and white box days.

Your good deed was a treasure to her.

Although the ammo is a treasure to you it was probably a nuisance to her.

I saw a price per hour at a local small motor repair place last year. $80.00 per hour. If she had to buy a new mower or take the parts to a shop to put it back together she would be worse off than trading you the ammo so don't feel too guilty.

Talking to him a couple of times over the years he said he had a couple Model 19s and a 66.They are being kept by her until she needs to sell them.I personally haven't seen them.Told her not to let anyone steal them from her when the time comes.

I have a Mod 28 s serial that was probably made about the same time that ammo was.And I happen to be really anal about cleaning my guns so I think that Highway Patrolman will do just fine shooting that stuff. And then there's a couple of 686s.

Thinking late 60s or early 70s.

I dig old ammo, especially round nose lead stuff. It doesn't look like what I woudl expect a 'soft point' to look like, but it's cool. Good job, and better job for not robbing her. I'm surprised how often that happens here with garage sale steals that only we know are steals. An ex-friend once told me, with pride, how he was undercharged at Best Buy for $300 worth of something and how he hurried to his car before they discovered it. He could afford it, too. As I said, ex friend.

Brokenprism, thanks for your service sir.The second picture I posted with the two cartridges on top of the box have me puzzled somewhat.Thirty plus years of handguns and I can't remember shooting anything that looked like that.Do you or anyone else have any insight on those rounds?

Default re the 2 cartridges on top of the box

Attn Tacreload: Those rounds are not related to that box. Rem. .357 soft point rounds of that era had nickeled cases and the heads were soft point with exposed lead at the top and a 'meplat' (small flat point). I have a box of these old loads; they were about the first factory mag load not to be full lead SWC or 'metal piercing.' Those seem to be handloads: the bullets vaguely resemble those in the .38 Spl. 200gr 'flying thumb' cartridge. The casings seem to be too short to be magnums, rather .38s. I wonder if the other magnum boxes contain handloads.

GOOD MAN!! But it could be a mixed blessing--- I shot a box of that 357 RN lead through a 8" Python once, took me two years to clean the barrel. might do better in something shorter.

You did the lady a greater favor by accepting the ammunition than you did by repairing her mower.

You know the good feeling you got because you helped her and didn't expect anything in return? Well, by taking the ammo, you allowed her the same feeling.

You did good.

You hit the nail on the head, greg, and hard! It would have hurt the lady deeply for him not to accept the ammo. Some folks want to recognize others; you really have to accept their gratitude. That's in part why it's better to say "You're welcome" rather than the meaningless "No problem."

Good show!

Wondering, lengthwise, about 38-44 stuff. Wonder how much of what is inside those rounds.

Upon further review you are correct sir.I kinda feel like a bit of a moron. Those are .38 special in that box.I didn't look at the head stamp til just now.Gee you'd think I would have noticed the length.Assuming, you know what that means. Thanks for calling my attention to that.I probably would've figured it out on my own at some point but to know sooner is more better.

Good on you! Remember, nothing says thank you, to a woman who is not your wife, better than a dozen long stemmed, old fashion, pink roses.
