Ranger T ammo performance
I purchased a quantity of Ranger T ammunition in .357 Sig at the recommendation of a Secret Service agent I know as it was their issued ammo at that time. I have reviewed said ammo and was surprised that in test by one party in gel, 4 of 5 rounds failed to expand after passing through denim. Has anyone else had experience with this projectile, and what was it? Any input would be appreciated.

I have no personal experience with that particular round, but have trained with several folks who's agencies use it with outstanding results. It was my agencies ammo of choice in 9mm and 40 cal, and it seemed to work as well as anything, and better than most. We tested both in gel tests, using denim and leather, and were impressed with the results. Retired now, Ranger T (bonded) is my choice of carry ammo in 9mm and 45 acp, along with Gold Dots, that also perform very well. Winchester PDX-1, by the way, is the same ammo as the Ranger T, just packed in boxes of 20, at a higher price...

Thanks Larry,...... I know now that Secret Service has transitioned to the Gold Dot although I don't know if it was a performance issue or cost. I was just a tad disappointed that the hollow point seemed to clog so often and inhibited expansion.

Your welcome. That's the funny thing about bullet performance - although it can be fairly reliably predicted, nothing is written in stone. Good bullets sometimes fail, and those known as poor performers sometimes surprise. Its never a bad choice to choose a bullet that has proven street performance among LEO users.

Going back to the ranger ( BT put in brass cases ) has been the best performing on my tests, NONE ever failed, which means I skewed the testing in some way that prevented failures. I say this because the ALL fail. I have seen 22 lr kill, 25 acp slide around the scalp, people with 3-5 38 LRN walk into the ER, 9mm's punch nice clean holes ( clean, band aid, ABX, home), 357's do incredible tissue and bone destruction, 40/10 doing similar damage, 45's have been good/bad all determined by placement. That said I carry the old, old ranger ( black bullet) in 40, Ranger-T in 357 Sig, and SB gold dots in J-frame 38's, my wife carries 45 ACP 230 +p old black bullet ranger. I have seen older Rem golden saber totally fail ( A troop shot a rott 40 180 saber, it his a 2 layer nylon collar, slightly disturbed one petal and pass through loose skin) and stuck just inside the skin. The skin was opened, bullet fell out and just about could be reloaded. The only good news was the troop was able to notify the family on the lake, rott got clean, ABX, was fine, both did their job except the bullet. This was late 1990's, MSP how changed ammo 3 X's- I believe they are carrying Gold Dot in the Sig 40's at this time. With all that said I am comfortable with the non bonded ranger 357 sig. Be Safe

I'm not surprised as Win.'s QC has gone into the toilet ever since they moved to MS in late 2010. I have Fed. HST for my SIG p229 .357 SIG.

Their +p PdX snubby .38 load came up about 100fps short in my last chrono session using my carry gun 442- which typically overlaps other snubby .38 data pretty closely.

Boge,
Thanks for your input friend. I must say I was mildly underwhelmed when I saw this one particular test. When just fired into the gel without the Denim it performed as advertised. I'm hoping to never have to worry about such performance but the information is good to know. Thanks again fellas.
