500WSM 30.jpg
This is not specifically S&W related but I didn't see a better place to post it.
I was recently at an open shoot and saw a round the maker called the "500 Winchester Short Magnum."
He used a 300 WSM case cut off at the shoulder.
In it he loaded 650-gr Browning 50 bullets with 40-gr of Winchester 296 for a supersonic round that pierced or shattered brake discs at about ~225 meters / 250 yards. He fired it from a Savage 111 Hoghunter originally chambered in .338 Win Mag, through a looong suppressor (he is a manufacturer). I forgot to ask about the barrel. It still made a "crack" when fired, but nothing like the BOOM & CRACK of other large, fast cartridges from unsuppressed guns. He said it has a muzzle velocity of about 450mps / 1500fps.
OAL 87mm/ 3+3/8".
He said he also loads 750-gr bullets with no loss of velocity or signs of pressure problems.
I believe he said that particular Savage rifle is difficult to find.
I'd like to hear from others who have done this, including other bolt guns for the round - and how to modify them.
I'm a fan of 296 but would be interested in learning about other powders.
