Canadian .38 special+P 158gr LSWCHP?
I bought about 200 rds of this ammo about 2-3 years ago. Was advertised to be similar to the Remington/Federal offerings. I still have about 100 rds left. From what I remember shooting it at the range was that it was extremely snappy in my 638 but shot like butter in my 66 4" and is extremely accurate. Google search of Canadian Professional Munitions didn't really show much. Anyone know of theses rounds? or have any info on the markings on the box? My guess is some type of government contract??

That was a lucky find, my friend. The Canadian government loaded them to reach 1,000 fps from a 5-inch Model 10 pencil barrel as the stipulated duty round of the RCMP and maybe some other agencies. Some years ago, Corbon duplicated it as a 38 Special 158 grain LSWHP +P+. It was an excellent defense round for the Model 19 snub and with the extra velocity had the same expansion characteristics as the FBI load fired from a 4-inch barrel. Too bad Corbon dropped it, along with the Sierra bullet 38 Special 115 grain JHP +P+.

The only info I can add is that Olin Corp. made the cases for CPM and the ammo was delivered to the U.S.A.F.
You have some highly collectable ammo since CPM made it for only one year (1990) as no other years of manufacture has been identified, and the fact that the ammo was made for the U.S.A.F. adds an element to its collectibility.

Wow guys! thanks for the responses. That's Why I'm a member here. I'm not a collector when it comes to ammo. It seems like this would make a fantastic self defense round.

I agree they would make a good defense round BUT, you just might want to save one of the 2 boxes considering they are very rare. CTG COLLECTOR doesn't use the words "highly collectable" loosely, would re-thing shooting them all.

I guess I won't shoot it. I'd be willing to sell it and buy something I can shoot. Any idea how much it would be worth? I have 1 complete box of 50. And one box with 29 rounds. 79 total.

I'm not a collector and I don't know prices but I'm sure CTG COLLECTOR will be along soon and he can probably help you out on prices... Heck, that one box might get you 2 or more boxes of SD ammo. (or more lol)

Single rounds would probably sell for $1.50-2.00 ea to a collector. A full box, maybe $50-60 max.
If you want to take the time, you can check with your local gun shops and see if anyone is interested in buying or trading with you for the ammo. Or maybe take it to a local gun show and try to sell/trade it there.

Not arguing, but since when did the USAF start using lead hollow points?? IIRC they stuck to FMJ ammo only - but I could see a case for them to use these in a Domestic setting or Military Base within the USA.

Congrats! You have a box of what everyone is looking for: the 158gr LHP .38 Spl load at the original late 60s/early 70s velocity: (1000fps in 4" as opposed to today's 870-ish). It's snappy alright!
Sell it? I'd keep it. Never know when you might need this load in your .38. Why dump it when the present "equivalent" is so watered-down? Sell it to get $50 or $60 bucks? C'mon! You hit a jackpot, friend.

I'm trying to think why the USAF would buy it. The Beretta 9mm was already in use for several years and the ,38 revolvers were being processed out. And HP ammo can't be used in combat zones.
Maybe it was for OSI use, if they retained some .38 or .357 guns?
Aircrew down in wild country might have used it to acquire food or for protection outside of combat zones, if they still had the revolvers. Maybe in Alaska?
I think the RCMP ammo was loaded by US firms like Winchester and Federal.
When did CIL/Dominion go out of business? Are there any Canadian ammo makers at all now?

I wish I knew myself who received this ammo and for what reasons it was made for the USAF.
