Storing Ammo question ??
Do you folks keep your ammo with your guns in the safe ?? or do you keep your ammo in a different safe ??? Or in another hidden spot away from the gun safes?? Thanks .

When I had young kids,I kept the guns and ammunition locked up and separated, even though I had taught them about guns.Im much more casual now, some of them are probably loaded.

My ammo is not locked up. I have a closet made for towels and other stuff. I use it for my ammo.

Mine just sit near the safe, in the same general area. Too much to fit into any safe.

All, actually, but I have more ammo than most, been collecting for a while. Enough is in the safe to ensure that what firearms I have in my safe are well stocked. I keep the rest here at home locked up in construction site job boxes. Not fire proof by any stretch but proven sufficient at at least slowing down a robbery attempt. I keep a lot at work as well, but I run a warehouse so it's an option for me.

We only own one rifle, an ancient M1 Garand. It got lonely in the long gun safe we purchased to secure it, so there are ammo cans stacked in the safe as well.
Admittedly, we live in a good area, with a police officer's family living across the street. So, we do not feel particularly vulnerable to burglaries. But, it is a good feeling to have everything locked up and out of sight.

Google the SAAMI ammunitions storage standards. Mine is mostly in plastic ammo cases stacked int the closet and gun case.

I have what I think is a nice work area in my garage. I use my work bench for both reloading and wood craft. I store my ammo on the reloading bench during winter months when the temps are low. During summer months we generally have triple digit daytime temperatures so I have to move it inside.
In the past I have stored some ammo in the garage year round. I never gave it much thought and have since shot most of it. Never had a misfire in the whole bunch. I wouldn't recommend that practice though. Storage in a cool environment is the way to go.

Why would you not just store it inside rather than move it back and forth seasonally?

Over the years, I have acquired two safes. One for guns only and one for ammo plus a few handguns.
If you have the space, it's really not that expensive to have two safes and your protecting a big investment in both the guns and the ammo, especially now days when ammo is hard to get and expensive!

While I keep a small supply in my gun safe for ready access, most of my ammo is simply stored in the garage in surplus military ammo cans.

Neither safe will feet my ammo + guns. I keep box or two with HP for home defense in safe, all other rounds are in metal boxes and stored in basement on concrete floor. It is like ton of weight and I prefer not to damage my house with it.

Not a bad system at all. Picking one up you never can be sure if its loaded or empty until you check. It forces you to check each one, every time. Its how I do it too.

I'm pretty careless with the ammo......
I should do better, but I have ammo laying around in a few places in my house. It's kinda heavy. The only ammo I keep in the safe is for defense.
