Default Federal aluminum-case ammo

Anyone else notice that Federal now makes range ammo with Blazer-style aluminum cases? Saw some at WM today: $9 for 9mm 115gr/box of 50, and either $15 or $16 for .45ACP ball, also for 50 rounds. Packaged in that purple-ish box seen at WM.Did not see other calibers.

Packaged in the maroon colored Federal Champion brand boxes, the alum cased ammo is an exclusive product for Walmart. The new ammo is made by CCI, just like the standard Blazer brand alum cased ammo and the Nyclad TNJ alum cased loads made exclusively for Cabelas.

Put a couple hundred rounds through my SR9c without issue.

Price point is about the same as factory reloaded brass.

Has anyone noticed? Yup, a few of us have.
It's been around since August.
ZQI's 9mm NATO works pretty good as well... Also at WM.

New offering from Federal in 9mm

I've shot about 200 rounds of the 9mm and 45 auto through my guns. As accurate as any brass cased ammo and I've had no issues at all with feed/function/ejection. I try to buy it as WM gets it in stock.

If you guys continue to use the Aluminum cased ammo you will anger the Range Brass Hogs........... LOL!!

Seriously,
if you DON'T re-load I suppose it will save you a few bucks, but I don't know too many people left these days that are serious shooters and aren't doing their own re-loading.

I bought a few boxes of the 115 gr 9mm. It looks exactly like CCI
Blazer and suspected that's what it is. I want to chronograph it to
see if it's loaded to the same velocity as Blazers but it's too cold
here right now for chronographing.

I've shot a few boxes of the aluminum .45 through my Ruger SR1911, and it worked fine. For the $14.99 that I paid, I'll buy some more whenever it's available.

I can't find any 9mm, but for $9.99 a box, I'd buy that too if I saw it. I've shot Blazer aluminum through my M&P Pro 9mm, and the Federal seems to be the same stuff.

Freedom Munitions is darn close to those prices though, being a penny cheaper on 9mm and a penny more expensive on .45ACP (and it's brass) so I stock up with them when there is free shipping, and only buy at Walmart when I'm about to run out.

It shoots fine in my shield, and its cheaper and cleaner than the steel case ammo walmart carries.

I have fired many thousand rounds of the 9mm in my Sigs, Smith and Glock without any problems. I once shot in a competition with it and the range director referred to me as "The guy with the hot ammo."

Really? I didn't think of it as particularly hot in either my Beretta or 1911, felt relatively mild compared to some minor PF loads I have made with Longshot and 124gr bullets.

I wish I could find this stuff still though. My local WalMarts don't seem to carry it anymore, the tag on the shelf is even gone. I thought it was great for the days where I don't want or have time to load or don't want to pick up brass.

Thanks, people. I didn't know it had been out there for several months. I was so surprised to see 9mm ball for $10/box, I had to give the Forum a shout. Please don't hesitate to do likewise; we only have each other.

CCI introduced the Blazer line with aluminum cases and Berdan primers about 30 years ago at prices somewhat lower than brass-cased ammo. Somewhere along the line they introduced "Blazer Brass", range grade ammo with standard brass cases. I'm not surprised that they are still in the business with aluminum cased ammo, or that they have some dedicated product lines for the bigger retailers in today's ammo-hungry market.

I've never had a problem with the stuff. About 20 years ago, when the Soviet satellite nations were selling off anything and everything, some very good Makarov-type pistols were available for under $100 and I played around with a few. Found CCI Blazer in 9mm MAK was far superior to any of the commie-bloc ammo available for the Makarovs. CCI even had a HP load at one time in 9mm MAK, also 9mm Parabellum, .38 Spl, and .357 magnum.

I don't reload, so I shoot both Blazer and Federal aluminum cased ammo. Don't have any issues with it. This is the first I've heard about CCI making these rounds for Federal. I pick up the aluminum Federal .40 S&W at Wally World for $15/box. Same price as Blazer from my LGS.

Matt

Default Federal alum. case

I have shot some 9 mm as 9mm is my c/c.

I got a problem now. I traded a LC9 for a LC9s and w/ colder weather, bought a G-19 for winter time. My problem is that both are so much fun to shoot, I am going to restart reloading 9mm. Glad I am retired as I reload .45 & 10 mm and will restart 9 mm

Saw some of those short & weak .40s for 14.97 same price as .45s At 9.97 for 50 on the 9s, darn good price.

I've only seen 9s at my local China-mart and recently saw .45 at another China-Mart. Saw price on .40 on a spot on the shelf at my local China-Mart

Did a search and found this thread, good, it seems there are no problems with the Federal ammo so I picked up 3 boxes at 9.97. Guess i'll have to stop after work and see if there is more as I left 7 on the shelf.

eh... I'd hold off on picking up more until I shot the 1st box or two and see how YOUR pistol likes it.
You probably won't have any problems, but JUST in case.

Hard not to pick up a box at that price and give it a try.

Brass cases run from $13.99 and up in my area.

You reloaders out there should take a close look into the newer aluminum cases and see if there is one or two flash holes. You might find that there is only one and yes it can be reloaded.

I picked up two boxes two weeks ago and split it between a Glock 19, Beretta 92F Compact, and a SIG P228. Much more consistent that the steel case Tula I would buy when too lazy to reload a few hundred 9mm rounds..

I finally got a chance to chronograph the Federal aluminum 115 gr
9mm ammo that I bought from Walmart a while back. Ran about 1180
fps out of my Browning HP. A little faster than the last lot of CCI 9mm
Blazer aluminum I chronographed at 1167 fps. I believe they are the
same stuff made by CCI. Good ammo, much better than some of the
watered down 115 gr 9mm on the market now than runs at 1050-
1080 fps and won't even cycle the action of my Browning.

I ordered a new pair of shorts from Cabelas yesterday and included 4 boxes of the Herter's branded aluminum cased ammo. It is also made by CCI. I have never had a problem with it. I reload 9, but at this price, why bother. I shoot outside, so don't mind loosing it.

So I went and shot 200 rounds of this Federal aluminum thru my SD9 without any problems, this was after a box of brass case ammo from S&B. I didn't put it on paper as I was just plinking so I will have to check up on that next. Only difference that I noticed was that the ejected cases all came up and to rear where the other ammo ejected to right-rear. Will buy more, especially at the 9.97 price that walmart charges.

I've been getting a lot of my usual .38's and .45 from Freedom Munitions for the brass case and low price when I buy bulk online, but since I buy 9mm sporadically I've been getting my supply instead of Federal aluminum from the local Wally World for quite some time. I've had not bad luck with them through my Browning Hi Power, feeding reliably and not bad accuracy at usual pistol range of 15-25 yards.

However, I have had nothing but problems with them through my UC-9 Uzi carbine. The low power and light bullet of the load is not really enough to cycle the heavy bolt in blowback gun reliably, leading to quite a few headaches. Even worse, for some reason they are unbelievably inaccurate out of the carbine, and even bench resting it at 100 yards on a 12 inch steel target they would miss half the time. This was very strange, considering there were times on paper I was able to make 3 inch groups on paper at 130 yards from bench, with the right lot of ammo and all, so just making a ding on a 12 inch target should be reasonable. After having such difficulties, I almost assumed there was something wrong with the weapon, but when I finally switched ammunition to some factory reload 124 grain loads tonight, I went back to wailing on the dinger simply shooting offhand at 80 yards. It was night and day between the two loads, and I can't understand why.

I was wondering if anyone else had carbine issues with the 9mm rounds, or if anyone would have an idea why such a poor performance? Is the barrel twist on the Uzi wrong for less than 124 grain, or is the consistent performance of this round not up to snuff outside of short range?

As for .45 ACP in Federal aluminum, I have had good results again with pistol, both 1911 and 1917. My friends came up last weekend with two boxes, and put many rounds through my Thompson TM1 as well, feeding reliably and proving accurate in that carbine.

Still, I am shocked at the performance in my Uzi. I was running the 9mm aluminum so long I assumed I had done something to hurt the barrel or damaged it somehow to perform so dreadfully. I received the usual "its just a combat pistol carbine, don't expect anything out of it", and almost questioned my exceptional results from before, but in this case it really was the ammunition.

Guess they "GOT IT" that everyone now knows that CCI and Federal are essentially the same Company now (like GM's different Divisions) so why not capitalize on their product lines. They are all vying for increased sales and since they have the dual product lines - why not?
