I recently had a friend in N.J. ask me if I had any of the aforementioned rounds. I did not but advised I'd seek some out. Well,.. after looking high and low, I was informed that Winchester no longer loads this combination, only the 3" version.
For a deer hunter in N.J. who has who has taken the trouble and expense of patterning their shotgun to the best load, this is disheartening. My friend had one round left.
As a last resort, I went to my local gun emporium and low and behold, he had two full, 25 round box's priced at 28 clams per box. Just a heads up for any of you all that do use it, buy it if you see it as they aren't making it any more.

Difficult to find other 12-gauge buck loads also. There has been PLENTY of standard 00 and #4 buck 12 gauge loads available even during the panic. However, other 12-gauge buck loads have been hard to come by: #1 buck/16 pellets, any short magnum buck loads, 3" magnum loads other than 00/15 pellets.

Unknown if they have been dropped or shunted aside so mfgrs can produce the 2 standards above.

Yes,.... another buddy was looking for 2 3/4 short magnum Number 1 buck and it's virtually nonexistent. Good stuff on deer up close too.

Hey, badge. I did find a few 5-round packs of standard #1 buck during the panic, while there were cases of 00, #4, and slugs. #1 patterns much better than 00, has to be seen to be believed. When I shot on the SFPD range in the early 80s, they had mounted silhouettes showing #1 patterns at various distances.

Also, very few 25-round boxes of buck, 5-packs all over. Stay safe, partner.

P.S. Also starting to wonder that maybe slugs are better than buck except at very close distances.

I have always had good luck, in the woods that is, with Number 1 buckshot. Although, I had a 3" Franchi at one time that LOVED 000 buckshot and it did hit hard. The downside was 10 pellets. At the JOB, we generally got the " state bd ", 00 buck, Remington or Winchester. Certainly not bad stuff by any means but towards the end we switched to the reduced recoil 00 buckshot which seemed to pattern better from our 18" barrels. I knew a NJ Trooper I hunted with years ago who swore by 3" Number 4 Buckshot. Said it took 'em down quick so long as you didn't stretch the range. What folks have to remember is each individual shotgun patterns each individual size and brand of buckshot differently. Once you find that load, stick with it.
