Ammo prices going back up?
I think I'm going to start buying more ammo again. Prices are pretty good now( relatively) and being careful not to wax political, lets just say things are getting interesting around the world again.
Jeez, Groundhog Day is a reality.

Agree. Never not a good time to buy ammunition... if you can find what you want at a price you consider acceptable.

It's like brucev said, "Never not a good time to buy ammunition."
I'm not one to get all caught up with the masses in a panic mode, but let's face it, it just makes good sense to pick up a box here and there when the price seems reasonable.
For example, I was at our local Sportsmen's Warehouse today and saw some .45 acp ammo and some .38 Special ammo at a fairly decent price, so I picked up a box of each. No panic buying...just picking up a couple of extra boxes to have on hand.
I reload also, but I still pick up a few boxes occasionally if the price is right.
From what I've read in other posts, a lot of the folks on this forum operate about the same way. They don't go nuts. They're just wise enough to make sure they aren't "caught with their pants down" when the need for ammo arises.

or, OR, it could be a good time to take up reloading...while the dies and presses, primers (don't mention powder ) are readily available...

I always figured ammo can sit on my shelf as well as it can sit on the store's shelf. That's always served me well in the past.

It's nice to have ammo. But I have 8 lb cans of 4895 and 231, 1000 each of the four sizes of primers, a box of 500 30 caliber 168 gr Siera Match bullets, another of 70 gr 223 match bullets, lots of moulds and lead. I'm pretty wellable to sit out an ammo shortage.

Instead of buying ammo....
Instead of buying ammo put the money into reloading equipment. A few hundred $$ initial investment will save a lot of money or at least let you shoot a lot more. I've got enough reloaded ammo in my house right now that were it the cost of store bought ammo, would pay for a good starting setup. Components have been hard to come by also, but when you get a chance, stock up. I'm not going to be caught with my pants down in case of another several years of shortages.

I too noticed a slight price hike at least at Walmart. I was told the local Dicks--was the same as they were a few months ago but--I dont veer into their store since they never have anything I want.
However--and take this with a grain of salt--the gun counter lady I spoke with at a WmI rearely go to--and only did so because of about to watch Ami Sniper--said they are getting in more and more bulk boxes of twenty two ammo. I havent seen any bolk boxes in 5 months cept at thieves tables at gun shows. Anyway,I did notice that both fourty five and nine MM were slightly higher in prices..

The lady told me she gets the ammo from the back at seven am--then puts it on the shelf-where she claimed that it stays a bit longer on the shelf each time. That is still way too early for me to try going. If it lasted till about eleven? then id attempt ago.

I reload and try to keep plenty of supplies on hand, but having said that, if I see a bargain on factory ammo I'm not opposed to picking up a box. Although this last bout of ammo pricing going through the roof didn't catch me flat footed it did get my attention, mainly the price of powder and primers shooting up.

Yes, buy ammo. I think the stock market folks call it cost averaging. Its the opposite of "stocking up". You just buy a box of ammo here and there. I buy such weird stuff no discount house would carry it. But flea markets do. I tend to avoid the one here by home. I don't like the guy that owns it because he says "handguns are no damn good" and won't allow them. It means I won't give him my $1 admission fee. But the smaller flea markets with just good ole boys dropping the tailgate on their pickup trucks are good. Often you'll find a guy cleaning things out and have a bunch of shotgun shells or deer ammo. At one over in Indiana I bought a box of 22 caliber bullets. All pretty old, my guess from the boxes maybe the 1950s or 1960s. He needed $20 for the box, with maybe 600 or 800 bullets. So I was nice and spared him the trouble. But I do hate lugging bullets all over the place. They're made of lead and not light.
In the past, buying and burning factory ammo was how we got our brass to reload. These days I can find it at gun shows, too. Other guys shoot the factory stuff, put it in a bag, and sell it to suckers like me. Its how I got a few hundred .30-06 and 7mm Rem mags. I basically stole the military surplus. The seller said he'd resized and deburred them. Then decided not to reload because he really doesn't want to shoot. The 7mm was from the guy and his kid at a table behind us. I'd been watching the empties all weekend. They were pretty disgusted that no one even showed interest in them. So as they were packing up, I asked what they really needed to get out of them. The guy said $20 for all of them. So I paid up and made a 2nd trip to the jeep. They had hundreds of them, and didn't want to take them home. When a friend saw the pile, he asked kind of incredulously if I really wanted them. Then he brought me a box full at the next gun show.

You can't go wrong buying ammo. Even though I reload, I still buy factory ammo when I find it at a good price. Just about every time I am in WM I will pick up a 100rd box of Win USA 45 ACP. That way I always have extra practice rounds on hand and can always reuse the brass.

A year ago, our discussion was not on prices going up, but rather on supplies being non-existent. I mail order in bulk, and get excellent cost effectiveness from vendors like Sportsman's Guide. The past month, I found a few 325 bricks of .22 for $20, one per customer. Stopped by on alternate days, and added to the small .22 cache. For the .223/5.56 mavens, there is a LOT of ammo out there to be had.

Except for .22, I think it will be a long time, if ever, before ammo gets a lot cheaper.
The dollar is strong, a lot it people are sitting on ammo and are not buying. Metals prices are low and Congress is not in the mood to regulate ammo at this time.
Someday, however, 223/5.56, .40 S&W, 9mm and .38 Special will cost $2.00 a round, and a lot of ordinary folks will not be able to afford recreational shooting.

I was told by the guy at our Wm that the gov't is buying everything in their warehouse regardless of cal. or gauge. Why do they need 1M rds of .22s and 410s for agencies that don't even carry a firearm?

It took 23 posts before the first government conspiracy theory appeared. That must be a new record.

I have of late had decent luck at Wally World. I mostly haunt a group of 4 around me. Just because of who I am I'll offer a little friendly banter. You never know what will spill out of someones mouth in reply. I only buy a few boxes. I take pains to not look like a hoarder. I'll even reply to the sales clerk asking me if that's all I want by saying I'm all set , leave some for others
I've noticed lately a little more of my stuff might come from a cupboard under the cash register. Not the locked glass case in the aisle.
I always say thanks too.

Ammo has bottomed out in price??? %&@# or another four letter reply. I certainly hope not. Current prices are no bargain. I was hoping for another 6-12 months of declines to be equal to 2010 prices.
After all, wages in general for most Americans are still stuck at 2008 levels............ Obama announced average wages were higher in the recent state of the union address. That is technically true according to the fact-checkers. They are up something like .03 percent over last year. For a typical $700 earner, that means they are earning about $0.21 per week more.

They've discontinued firearm sales here in Mass also, but still have a tiny ammo cabinet that I'm sure will disappear some day.
I also treat the clerks very nicely and wait patiently while they find the one person in the whole store who has the key. They keep it around their neck like some sort of mystical talisman. I guess I'm dating myself by saying that I remember when they had ammo on the shelves like everything else they sell.

I started reloading about 8 months ago, best gun related investment I've made. I have about 1200 rounds of .45 ready to go and enough supplies to load another 2000 (probably enough powder for 6000). I still buy 9mm and .22 if see it but I'm can go without for quite a while now.

The government buys from Walmart? Really? They don't do their own contracting directly from the manufacturer? Not enough purchasing power I guess

Same here. The nearest one that has ammo is 40 miles away

My local municipal PD does buy training ammo from WalMart. There has been more than one occasion that I've run into the range officer at the gun counter, looking for bulk .22.
He explains that their "official" supplier can't get stock either.
The PD for the next town over has all officers provide their own ammo from an approved list, but they have to find it to buy.

I've seen more ammo available as of late and to me the prices aren't so high that if I needed some that I wouldn't buy it. However since I reload I don't buy any ammo other than 17 HMR and 22 LR and right now I have a decent inventory of both.

WISE MOVE, JESSIE. PRICES WILL NEVER RETURN TO WHAT THEY WERE ALMOST A DECADE AGO. THE AVAILABILITY OF .22 LR AMMO SEEMS TO BE ON THE INCREASE, ON LOCAL STORE SHELVES. I SEE OUTRAGEOUS PRICES BEING ASKED AND PAID, FOR HARD TO FIND CCI MINI-MAG, 40GR, COPPER PLATED SOLIDS--WHICH IS MY ROUND OF CHOICE. THE SAME SELLERS SEEM TO HAVE AN ENDLESS SUPPLY…..
YOU ARE ALSO WISE TO NOT WAX POLITICAL. I HAVE BEEN SANCTIONED ONCE, FOR A COMMENT I MADE, SO I LEARNED MY LESSON…..
