HPR ammo for self defense?
Anyone familiar with this brand? Saw a brief write-up in First Freedom and wondered about getting some for home defense and carry.

HPR was in a 3" 9mm test and it was a good factory load that
passed the gel and 4 layer denim test.
Many of there secondary ammo companies use quality and stock
bullets in their loads from target to SD ammo. You do have to do
a little studying on bullets used to see if they fit your needs.
In my area the price is ok...........

I have used their TMJ in .45ACP (the red box) and JHP in 9mm (also red box). Both fired without issue (.45 in a 1911, 9 JHP in a Shield). It was a hair expensive ($1.50 / 50 more than the rest), but it was there when nothing else was. So not a purchase of initial choice, but at this point, no complaints.
I don't do testing, so can't offer technical details.

For defense, I don't see an upside to taking a chance on an unvetted brand when proven ones are so readily available.
Plinking? Sure. Staking mine and my loved ones lives? No.

What do you use? Right now I use Speer or Hornady Critical Defense in my carry guns. A jacketed hollow point just seems to make sense.

My experience with HPR is in .380. HPR 100 gr. TMJ's are the best functioning range ammo in my P380. Never, ever fails to feed or fire in 2 different guns. HPR .380 HP's is one of the ammos that use the Hornady XTP bullet which also functions well in my P380. Net, no issues with HPR in the .380. I do think I have better choices than HPR in the other calibers I shoot (but I've not tried them in 9mm or 40 cal).

.38 Special is my primary defense load in a revolver, with occasional switches to .357.
I like Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel; Corbon DPX; Buffalo Bore Standard Pressure 158 grain LSWHP (FBI load).
Back ups I'm happy with are Hornady Critical Defense and Remington Golden Saber.

As a note the HPR ammo is 100% made in the USA........
the 380 and 9mm are loaded with the Hornady XTP bullets.
Some like this bullet but I rate it as a class "B" SD load with
better loads out there to use in my test.........
but they may do well in your weapons. One never knows.
