Winchester .22 LR Ammo
Blundered into two 550 round boxes of Winchester White Box .22 Long Rifle 36 grain Hollow Point Ammo at Wal-mart. First I have seen in a while.

22's? Are those the little bullets we use to shoot and have fun with all day? Can't say I've seen many anymore. You are a lucky guy.

Suddenly a few boxes isnt a lot lol

Well into over 2 years the .22 lr ammo shortage continues. I can buy all the handgun, shotgun, and rifle ammo I want. But you will be lucky indeed to see one box of .22 lr ammo on the shelf.
The .22 lr manufactures need to open additional plants dedicated to the making of .22 lr ammo. Production needs to increase by at least 10 - 15 million rounds a day. Don't forget .22 lr ammo is exported as well. If I had the money I would invest in building a .22 lr ammo plant and make millions of .22 lr bullets and employ a good number of hard working folks besides. You can't loose....

I am very interested in the performance of the Winchester you scored, been hearing bad things about the brand. Hope you got a deal instead of duds!

Obviously the people who have the expertise and the money to do this (Remington, Winchester, CCI, Federal etc.) don't agree with your business plan. I think the added supply would make people realize that they didn't need to buy every last round and the Walmart buyer/resellers would be out of business. This would lead to excess capacity which would be bad for an investment in new plants.

With the addition of perhaps millions of more .22 lr firarms owner, AR15 .22 lr conversion kits, there are simple more people buying .22 lr ammo than 4-5 years ago yet capacity has not increased. Of course there is a shortage.
The only increase has been the price which as increased well above the price of raw materials or inflation. From a Walmart price of $10 / 550 rd box to $25+ (if you can even find it) / per same box is a big increase

The problem here is it costs a gazillion dollars to build a plan; don't forget all the permits required either. Then, after all that, there is no guarantee the demand will continue long enough to make the factory pay for itself.

I couldn't tell you how many bricks of Win I shot this year, both 40gr and 36, I only had a few FTF's and all went bang the second time around except one.

Sadly, when you hear such horror stories, it's hard to tell if the problem is in the gun - or a bad batch of ammo.

Your right, I have three 22's one wheel gun and a 22a and an old Mossberg 151M semi and didn't have a problem with any of them, yet I have people tell me that they can't shoot hollow point's through a semi and I'm sure you can get a bad lot, there was a show on TV, I think it was How It's Made, they were in a factory, they didn't say who, but they were making 22's, you wouldn't believe how fast they were spitting them out, it's a wonder any of them work.

Winchester 22lr
I recently found this Winchester M-22 22lr 1000 count (two 500 boxes inside)
in stock at Walmart.
I was leery about buying, but given the current State of Affairs, decided to
buy them to conserve my Federal 550 stash, and no 22lr to the gougers.
I read up on the reviews when I got home. Reviews were any where
from very dirty, to best 22lr ammo I ever bought, and to the Black List.
I will defiantly buy more. Cycled though both of my S&W 617s,
Ruger 1956 Single Six (very accurate),
Winchester and Marlin Trappers (Win=dead on, Marlin=little to the right),
S&W 2206 Tgt (no dirtier then other 22lr)(very accurate).
.05 cents/round.

That's been pretty much my experience with it too.
