Default $5.00 a round for Black Talon .357 . Really ?

I just cannot believe that Black talon 357 would bring $400.00 for 80 rounds.
Am I missing something ?

Winchester BLACK TALON 357 Magnum 180 Grain SXT : Pistol Ammunition at GunBroker.com

Oh. I guess if you are willing to pay almost $3000. for a 3 inch 686-5
then $400. for ammunition to feed it is not out of line.

S&W 686-5 PLUS 3" Pre LOCK 7 SHOT UNCATALOUGUED : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

I guess the seller must be living a charmed life.

Hey, I've got a box of them I could let go for that. 9mm's, too. And a box of 44 mags I discovered. If you're buying, we could deal.

Default They 'stopped'' making..

They stopped making 'Black Talon' due to public disfavor. They continued to make them but under the name SXT without hyping the sharp edged expansion feature. I don't know if they still make it, but somebody with a lot of money to burn may buy them from the guy. That would not be me.

PS People say that SXT stands for 'Same Exact Thing'.

They are collectible, people don't buy it to shoot. That price seems high but it's a free country.

Seller is a recognized member here. And yes I've watched some other things he's sold. Seems to get top dollar on everything.

Single rounds of the original BT ammo should go for $2-3 max ea. Full boxes in excellent condition may go for $50-75 depending on caliber. Some people may be willing to pay a premium price for BT ammo.

Got an ammo box full of them in all calibers from back in the day. The 180 grain 357 magnum load is good on deer; but, aside from that, they are expensive because of the name and the legend behind them.

There was a day a while back, like 15 years ago, when I bought a new rifle. It was a weatherby in .30-378, and the loaded ammo cost $80 for a box of 20. Do the math, thats $4 a shot. But then you get the brass for your fun of reloading. And I bought 2 boxes and another 2 boxes of primed brass. I even had some friends (of questionable quality) who laughed at me. I really didn't care, it was my gun, my money, and they didn't own anything remotely similar. One of the group even tried to borrow a rifle to take hunting. He had sufficient means, he was just too cheap. And I didn't/don't have a gun I would loan out. Especially to a guy who doesn't own anything similar.

So I don't think $4 or $5 a round is that outrageous. I'd rather pay less, but there are some calibers that offer more than others. This thread is about profiteering. But the price isn't that outrageous except the seller doesn't offer value for the money.

I stuck a couple sealed cases away figuring they would be collectible one day....

Guys still talk about them as if they were magic. They weren't all that and a bag of chips. Today's best self defense loads are far improved.

I suppose the problem with the Black Talon would be you cant get the bullet to reload with? Unlike your rifle..

Rifle ammo is one thing, but handgun ammo is totally different.

I doubt that the people buying original BT ammo are doing so to load it in their SD handguns. It's collectable ammo and it's a novelity to have it.

BT is a curious beast. I have watched wax and wane over the past 6 years, almost makes me want to get rid of the full sets ( rifle and handgun, plus one box marked prototype Black Talon. I have no idea what the prototype looks like since it is in a factory sealed box. Any one ever see it? Be Safe,

Never seen nor heard of the prototype. Any chance of posting clear pics of the box?

CTG_ I will get into that cabinet in the next day or 2 and get some clear photos. The ammo rep probably had a stamp and there is some nasty, ugly, off sized ball in it!!! Be Safe,

I have a box of the .45 Auto. Up until now I thought I would be lucky to find someone to buy the box at a buck a round. I learn something new every day.

Yup.

The current SXT along with others like the Federal HST, are superior, despite the mystique and hype.

I went to qualify a few years ago, and a friend of mine that just got done showed me his partial box of Black Talon. He used BT's to qualify and seid he could not find any ammo the night before. I didn't say anything, but I would of traded him 2 boxes of FMJ for each box of BT.

AND... that auction was run up by the bidders - NOT by the seller. Started at one penny with no reserve and no buy-it-now. I don't have the stomach for high-dollar items to sell like that.

And yes, I know the seller too. We have traded and done business several times. Top notch guy!

I was also curious why the same item, 4 boxes new old stock sold for exactly 1/2 the amount just a week later.

Winchester Supreme Black Talon 357 Magnum 4 boxes : Pistol Ammunition at GunBroker.com

Yes, it was my auction.

Just the luck of the draw I guess.

A new sucker is born each day and some people would rather have the ammo and are wealthy enough not to care what it costs.

I retired from law enforcement just about the time the networks discovered Black Talon ammunition and started the shock and awe campaign against such terribly effective ammunition. At the time I could order Black Talons on a department letterhead order, so I did so and laid in a carton of 500 of the .45ACP 230-grain, another in 9mm, and one in .357 magnum, all at LE prices of about $14.00 per box.

About 10 years ago I noted that folks were willingly paying about $2.00 per round for this stuff. Couldn't imagine how it would ever get better than $100.00 per box of 50, so I sold off just about everything (keeping one box of .45ACP) and made a killing.

Along about 2008 we started seeing ammo supplies dry up. By 2009-2010 it was very difficult and quite expensive to obtain just about any factory ammo, powder, primers, or anything else.

Now I see those Black Talons going for $200.00 per box or more.

Must work on my timing!

A. Frame
Wow. Unloading some revolvers and putting some rounds back in the boxes. May be able to put a kid through college with that price point.

Collectors are nuts and that's all there is to it.
In the mid-'80s I bought some of that teflon-coated ammo and stuck it in the safe, figuring (correctly) that I'd never use it. I read that it brings $10 a round. Nuts.

In the mid-'60s I was partner in a 1959 Porsche 356 Carrera. Pretty nice "race car with a roof". Worth what they sell for today? Ohhhh, no.
I have a friend with a 1961 Ferrari 250GTO. Nice car? Yeah, so long as you don't try to drive too far with it. $12,000,000? Oh HE&%L no! But that's what he paid for it.

Makes me wonder how so many are probably down range in a pile of shredded rubber after penetrating a paper silhouette at two dollars a pop.

CTG COLLECTOR: Finally got to the photos. Both end flaps are covered with a sticker, with the Following : 40 S&W (180) HOLLOWPOINT EXPERIMENTAL 6022 "I". The front is standard ranger , LE ammo. The only box I had ever seen, of course it is shrink wrapped!! I have no idea what it looks like. Any info would be appreciated. Be Safe,

I have a box (20) of Black Talon .44 magnum that I would gladly sell for $5/round, $100 for the box. I'll even pay shipping.

Having bought and sold a "few" boxes of BT over the years, I have never been able to understand GB auctions on BT. I have sold some at ridiculous price- caused by the buyers, and bought some ridiculously low. It does not seem to follow any rhyme or reason, such as you would see with proposed bans, "shortages" real or imagined. When the market is high I have pondered selling my last 2 perfect sets ( all rifle & handgun ammo), in new condition boxes. I have a sufficient supply of 40 165 gr ranger ( black bullet), 45 +p 230 ranger ( black bullet), and 380 ranger. Who knows one day I may decide to get rid of it. Be Safe,
