The .45acp out of a standard length 1911 barrel is probably the ONLY round in FMJ I would consider a real man-stopper. Even though it will not expand, the almost 1/2" diameter and 230 grains of weight is enough to reliably get the job done.

My personal MINIMUM SD round is .38 Special +P. Although I own .380's I bought them strictly because I love the gun (not the caliber) and would never under normal circumstances use one for SD. By the way the gun is a Colt M1908 Series M Pocket Pistol. I've also got one in .32acp and .25 acp.
