I believe the 45 S&W is shorter in OAL and the bullet dia might not be the same as the Colt.
Just checked - the bullet is the same dia but the OAL is definitely shorter.
Rim is also larger than the colt.

45 Schofield (45 S&W) can be fired in a 45 Colt (not 45 Long Colt) revolver, but the reverse is not true. the overall length of a 45 Schofield round is 1.43" and the 45 Colt is 1.60". The reason why a 45 Colt will not chamber in a 45 Schofield is that chamber is stepped down at the point where the lead bullet would be seated in the brass, and depending on caliber, the step is in a different location. Most reproduction 45 Schofield revolvers will chamber both the 45 Colt and the 45 Schofield round.
Ballistics are about the same and most are loaded to speeds of 700 to 800 fps, using a 200 to 250 grain lead bullet.

Agree with Gary, most modern replicas will chamber both. .45 Schofield ammo is still intermittently available.

Look to the Old Western Scrounger for some .45 S&W, nost of the time they usually have it. If not, you can always load your own.

The reason I asked is that I like the Scofield top break concept, yet never owned one. I do have some Uberti 1873 colt replicas won at FNRA events and was looking to see if the S&W Scofield would accept the 45 long colt.If not I guess I'll look for a Scofield that does accept the 45LC.I don't reload and my wife's FFl does include storing powder anyway. Besides, I like to keep my ammo types to a minimum.

Uberti makes a Scofield that takes .45 Colt. It's available through various distributors. Glowe correctly states that the accurate term is ".45 Colt" not ".45 Long Colt" but in common usage, the terms refer to the same cartridge. Long Colt, while technically incorrect, differentiates between that round and the shorter .45 Scofield. At one time, the US Army issued revolvers in both calibers, but discontinued the practice at least in part due to the logistics considerations when the wrong cartridge was distributed to troops in the field. Some units carrying the Scofield got .45 Colt ammunition that would not chamber in their handguns.
I bought one of the first Scofield revolvers available because I also was attracted to the top break concept. The handgun would open when fired, and I sent it back for a refund. I believe currently available revolvers do not have that problem.

I have been pleased with my early reproduction Navy Arms Schofield. It is chambered in 45 Colt, but I usually shoot 45 Schofield for authenticity. It handles smokeless loads just fine and I load for about 750 fps. Interesting how pervasive the 45LC nomenclature is in the industry. You will note that the barrel was even stamped as such.
