Default 38 spl 125 grn +P Question:

I noticed Underwood Ammo has some Gold-Dot bullets loaded to advertised velocities of 1200 FPS. I was considering pulling these to seat Rem. 125 grn SJHPs to see what kind of performance in gel and varmints to look at what an older police officer said was issued in his time, Rem 125 grn SJHP at about 1150-1200 fps in their K-frames.

Would this cause any known problems?

Well, I can't guarantee anything either way, but seating a different bullet on an unknown charge of an unknown powder to an arbitrary depth while working with what appears to be a near-max load cartridge sure violates a few loading safety principles.

It might be a non-event (or not), but using a .357 L frame revolver would provide some safety factor compared to shooting them in an old K frame. And without a chronograph to check, assuming velocities from advertised figures is just a guess.

I would load the bullets in question in .357 cases using proven powders and charges until the chronograph said 1200 from my 6" 686, then fire away at gel or whatever. The bullet does not know how it got to 1200 fps, so the results should be comparable.

My intention was to be shooting them in either a N-frame, Heavy Duty, or a Ruger GP-100. Sorry forgot to mention that.

Going from a A-1 quality bullet to a "Old Days" SJHP want a be
is no big thing for just lets see what happens..........

However when you break a "Seal" on a load and mess around doing this and that, the round is generally never 100% again.

Heck, you might as well try a few with candle wax or blue permatex in the tips, while you are at it and get it done with.

Well, I've already placed cyanide in the hollowpoints and sealed them with red candle wax to take care of a fish problem. It was with factory Rem.125 +P loads.

any questions please contact me:

Try to ignore the pundits. No, it's not going to cause a problem in your
HD or GP100. Jacketed bullets have a crimp cannelure so use it as I'm
sure the factory rounds do. Realize that "advertised velocity" is
exactly that, advertised, whether now or then. Not sure what you are
likely to learn unless you have the gel and varmints to fire the bullets
into but if it makes you happy to take a little fantasy trip back into the
past go for it. I would be greatly surprised if you learned anything
really meaningful but if you do please post it here.

Many moons ago I used to load those Rem 125 SJHPs to about 1200fps and more (pre-chrono days).

BUT, they were .357 mag loads fired out of a 4" Security Six. I would treat any such loads as .357 mag and fire out of a .357 mag rated gun, NOT .38 Spl.

For my money, too many variables and unknowns here. I remember the original R-P 125gr and 158gr JHP loads, both pre Plus-P designation, introduced in about 1969. Both were loaded with a heavy charge of slow burning powder. When fired in a 4" bbl, one could pour a large amount of unburned powder from the fired cases.

I fired the remaining loads in a 16" bbl. Rossi lever carbine and the muzzle blast was still substantial despite the long bbl and no cylinder gap. Eventually, R-P changed to a faster burning powder more suitable to a handgun, so I don't know which load you are attempting to duplicate.

Im not sure which either, Hence my asking about the validity of it here.

He is an retired LAPD or LASD, forget which, And he was issued a Model 15 and later a Model 67 DAO. and told me their load was made for them by Remington and the boxes were marked 1200 FPS 125grn Remington 38 Special in white boxes. He showed me one of the rounds he had left over and it is the 125 SJHP same as used today. That is all the info I have.

This is the underwood load I saw:

I thank everybody for replying so far! I appreciate the help.
