Default Double Tap 38 Spl +P 158 gr SWC???

Has anyone tried this ammo? Test its velocity? It looks like a good duplicate of the old 38 Special Hi Speed loadings if the velocities indicated are correct.

It appears you are really on a mission with this hi-speed .38 stuff.

You need to get your own chrono and buy and test some of this stuff you keep asking about like Buffalo-bore, Double-tap and the like.

The two ranges I go to do not allow chronographs - safety reasons they state since they are open to "Johnny Public." I sold my chronograph years back. Living where I do has some advantages but two are certainly not shooting ease and space. Now Texas...that's a great state with plenty of real estate for great shooting (and chronographing ease).

I have to seek the help of nice members as you and others here to help me - I really appreciate the assistance and great inputs.

I also recall the days when chronograph costs were prohibitive and we had to rely of the few who could afford them, and reloading manuals. The reloading manuals were in the ball park with a lot of the loads when we were lucky enough to get them tested.

I have and shoot the 158 SWC-HP GC+P in my 4in and snub. From an 1 3/8in snub they do indeed cross 1000fps, and in a 4 in barrel I get 1100-1130 fps depending on batch.

It is nice to have a chrony to see what a load is doing...........

However I loaded 40 years with out one and was a happy camper just shooting paper and getting good groups now and then.

I can live with out fps data, if the groups are tight.

I only Big Deal my SD ammo with a chrony, just to make sure it is in the ball park.
One reason I went from Speer to Federal in my 9mm SD load.

So what weapon , barrel length, caliber, are you going to use for your SD use?

I'm trying to find a load near the old factory 38 Spl Hi-Speed/38-44. BB is over that velocity and is more in 357 Mag velocities in my opinion.

If you're looking for a 38-44 load what are you going to shoot that load in? I have owned and carried and shot 38 Specials since 1965. Almost all of them Smith&Wesson. Recently I purchased a Ruger GP 100 3" in 38 Spl. Thought about 38-44 loads in it, but realized I own too many old 38s and J frames to have an ammo mixup! Had the Ruger bored out to 357. Buffalo Bore 158+P LSWCHPGCs at 1150 are reserved for Model 19s, L frames and up. The original 38-44s were loaded for N Frames. Smith Heavy Duties were designed for the load! I would never fire that load in a J frame or a pre Model K frame. Good luck!
