Default Who's got the best .223 price?

I'm looking to stock up on some .223 ammo, 1000 to 2000 rounds. Who's got the best prices, including shipping?

You will have to dig a bit. You are late to the buying rush that started after Orlando, and unless you're happy with steel case, the great deals are gone for now.

I use SGAmmo or Palmetto State Armory for mail order, but if your Wal-Mart carries ammo, look for Perfecta. Just at $15 / 50 rounds here lately.

I just ordered 1,000 rounds of Wolf Gold for $328.60 shipped. Their email says it will be delivered Friday. It's 55 grain FMJ brass case made in Taiwan. I got it from SGAmmo.

I have shot this before and it was the same velocity and accuracy as the Winchester 5.56 .

SGAmmo is my go to for bulk ammo. They do charge shipping but it's always reasonable and their ammo prices are good.

Sgammo for their flat rate shipping. There may be others but then shipping will play a factor. Their 223 Wolf Gold is $309.50 + $16 shipping = $325.50. Target Sports USA has it for $1 less

I dont use .223 but see it pop up on my daily emails from Palmetto State Armory (they just had some American Eagle for .35 per round w/ free shipping). No clue what is a good price for that ammo but if that's going to become the unicorn for everyone may as well sign up for their emails to grab something if it's priced right.

I would say that i lived in SC for a few years and used PSA more frequently (their store and their range was nearby). They at times could be very competitive on .22 ammo when it was hard to find by keeping their retail what it should be, but other times they were much higher than standard retail. Can't say how they will be on the higher caliber stuff though.

Have you tried wikiarms.com? I've never used them but I've heard others who like it. The last time I ordered Cheaper Than Dirt had a sale. PMC Bronze for $0.30/round. I subscribe to various "emailers" and see what's the cheapest when I need some.

This is exactly the reason I got into reloading this year. Spent all of last year stocking up on factory reloadable ammo and this year so far purchasing the equipment and components to reload nearly everything I shoot. Now if I could only figure out how to reload 22lr. I'm sitting on over 10k rounds of factory ammo and by November should have enough components to reload at least that many. Not getting caught with my pants down!

I buy from SGAmmo. They still have some brass cased 223/5.56 ammo. Look under quantities there should be a number which translates into the number or boxes/cases. If you see a zero then they are out on that particular item. Frank

I don't reload as of yet, so I've hunted around the web for various calibers.
Unless someone is running a great deal, I stick to the following:

SGAmmo tends to have the best price per round, especially on rifle ammo. They do charge to ship, but it's reasonable. Probably the best site for the base price.

For pistol ammo, I always check TargetsportsUSA. Free s/h if you buy by the case, and they also run sales on Federal ammo often. I've gotten Blazer Brass 9mm 124 gr ammo for $200 shipped.

If you have time to pick and choose, Sportsmansguide is good. I'm currently on a free trial to their Buyer's Club (they were offering a 30 day free trial), and was able to get a case of Wolf Gold .223 for $297 with free s/h. I think that was probably the best price going.

Cheap? Oh yea! You don't need a chrome receiver. While it is steel it is also very soft it's not like the cases are stainless or billet or bar stock. Technically it's harder than brass but it's still very very soft.

If you don't mind waiting for a rebate, you can get an effective cost of 30 1/2 cents a round on brass UMC at Cabela's. Buy at least 2 of these: Remington® UMC® Rifle Ammunition Value Pack : Cabela's

Get free shipping with code 66FLAT, then get a $40 rebate from Remington.

True, but there are times when they are running a good price, and it's worthwhile to get a case.

I got a case of Blazer Brass 124 gr 9mm when the price dropped to 9.99 a box of 50; it was under $200 shipped. Not a bad deal, and I don't mind the softer shooting BB for some of the older guns.

SGAmmo does tend to be tops, though.

Select by quality first, then price. Cheap ammo that sucks is really expensive.

SG is always good to go by me. No cheaper shipping, but they are quick as heck.

PSA has been steadily running the 35 cents deal, alternating between Federal 223 and 5.56. The 5.56 is a phenomenal deal when it comes at 35 cents shipped. Stocked up when I saw it recently.

Lastly, Sportsman's Guide is solid by me as well,. That 29.95 pays for itself in just about an order and I stocked up there after Orlando for 1,500 rounds at about 30 cents per for shipped brass. Can't complain about that.

Midway is selling 420-count cans of IMI M193 ball for $184.99 before shipping with a two can limit.

At 44 cents per round, it's certainly not the cheapest, but it's worlds better than anything you'll get from Wolf.

Not true Wolf Gold is going to be on par with IMI and can be had for $310-$325 per 1000.

You can also get Federal American Eagle 233 for $6.99 per 20 shipped, min 10 boxes.
American Eagle 223 55gr FMJ Ammunition 20rds - AE223J

There are much better deals for plinking ammo than $.44 IMI. I like IMI but won't pay a premium for it. Last batch I bought was $.32 at Cabelas.

I picked up some Federal XM855 today from Mass ammo 5% off and free shipping for $.348 a round.

SGAammo
SGAmmo.com | Family Owned and Operated Ammo Sales, Stillwater OK

TargetSports
Target Sports USA - Free Shipping On Bulk Ammo & All Firearms

SGAammo usally has better prices, but TargetSports has free shipping. However, the shipping that SGAammo charges is not excessive.

The Armory is a great source for Wolf Gold. You can get 1000 in a used ammo can for $309 + shipping. It used to be $300 shipped.

I also like SG ammo. These days you really have to shop around multiple sources when you are ready to buy because the market fluctuates 10 to 20% based on a lot of factors.

Wolf Gold is brass cased and made in Tiwan.

Wolf is not a Russian company. It's an American company that buys ammo from Russia, Germany, Tiwan and others. All sold under the one name....Wolf

Wolf is a trademark of Sporting Supplies International based in California.

IMI is also sold under the name Independence

Well, if the Taiwanese Wolf Gold actually fragments like M193, I would agree it's a stellar deal.

I've read less than flattering reviews of earlier incarnations of it on arfcom that were substantiated with photos, is all. (Rebranded Prvi Partizan, maybe? It has been a while.)

IMI has also been sold under the Winchester name as product Q3131A.

Just speaking for myself, but Winchester is my first choice followed by Lake City.

Nope. It's lead FMJ. It's not made in Russia and Wolf is not Russian. Steel case wolf ammo comes from the Tula plant (TulaAmmo). When they order Russian ammo from Russia they get steel case with bimetal bullet.

If the bullets will attract to a magnet, numerous indoor ranges in S.E. Michigan, will not allow you to shoot it. I also have read from reputable sorces, they cause excessive wear on barrels.

IMI has also been sold under the Winchester name as product Q3131A.

Just speaking for myself, but Winchester is my first choice followed by Lake City.
Your info is old and when you are punching paper who cares if the bullet fragments like M193. Even if you remove that and look at the price you are quoting for IMI its not a good price.

AE M193 is often on sale for $6-$7 a box I just bought AE XM855 for $.34 a pop in the mini ammo cans shipped in larger plastic ammo box.

$.44 for IMI is not a deal. That is what Cabela's sells it at everyday. They have been known to drop it to as low a $6.99 per 20. Last time SGammo had it they were selling it for $379 for 1200 rounds. Again I am not knocking IMI it is decent ammo but at $.44 your are getting ripped off. IMHO

BTW, I went to bullets.com to see what they had, saw some reman .38 spcl at a good price, ordered 10 boxes, hit checkout and was told it could not be shipped to CA. Called them and the customer service person could not tell me why it could not be shipped except if there is a prohibition in one county then they will not ship to the whole state. To my knowledge the only prohibition at this time in CA (could be different on Jan 1)is no hollow points in the City of San Francisco. Unfortunate that the People's Rebulic of CA has been able to intimidate businesses in other states. Another blow to freedom.

I don't purchase M193 "just for plinking." There's the difference.

"Dated" info is relevant if still holds true. In this case, Wolf switched their Gold line to Taiwanese surplus and I conceded as much. Unless it's actual M193 spec, though, I have no interest in it. I'm a pragmatist; I practice with what I intend to carry when it's viable to do so. We're talking about M193 ball as opposed to $1+/per round "barrier blind" ammo, so it makes sense.

I also like to stick with what's tried and true (i.e. it can be reasonably expected to fragment within a certain velocity envelope), even if that means I'm not necessarily getting a "bargain." If I can get Q3131(A) or XM193 for 35 cents per round or less on sale, all the better. 44 cents per round isn't a great buy by any stretch, but it's not approaching highway robbery either. (44 cents times 20 is $8.80 before tax, which is not much higher than the $7/box benchmark.)

In any event, buy what you want guy; it's your money.

There is range/general use ammo and there is self defense ammo. Quality self defense ammo is 100 fold better than 193 or 855.

Gold Dots
IMI razor core BTHP SMK
Winchester Ranger
Australian BTHP SMK
Federal Tactical Bonded
Hornady

Yes they are expensive but they work much better.

Training with what you use is good but you really don't see a huge difference in recoil or accuracy (unless all you do is bench). I've never heard of anyone constantly training with HP handgun ammo

Against windshields and car doors, yes. Against soft targets, as long as the velocity is within the proper envelope, M193 works just fine. Even through clothing.

I'm not worried about terminal performance through the intermediate barriers found in an automobile.

RA556B is great, until it gunks up your feed ramps in extended firing sessions with those soft noses.

Stay safe.

So you really weren't interested in answering the OPs question you were only interested in telling people what ammo you use. I mean that is ok but it really does not answer the question does it?

The question was:

Quote:
I'm looking to stock up on some .223 ammo, 1000 to 2000 rounds. Who's got the best prices, including shipping?
Everyone else seems to have understood the question and answered it. Wolf Gold is the most consistent brass cased ammo in the $.30 range. It is within 50 fps of XM193. Shoot 200 rounds and then shoot 200 XM193 and the recoil profile will not be any different. It IMHO will be more accurate than most XM193. Other people offered up other ammo in the $.30 to $.35 delivered range.

Your info is dated and inaccurate. At least you admitted that but what you fail to concede is the Wolf Gold is the current answer, assuming brass cased, to the OPs question.

As I stated before fragmentation on paper is not necessary. If I cannot tell the difference in recoil impulse between Wolf Gold and XM193 then why do I need to plink with more expensive XM193?

That is why I and others suggested Wolf Gold but you still protest even when your answer to what is best priced ammo shipped for 1000 or 2000. Your answer was $.44 IMI which is about $.10 more than one should be paying for XM193. Seems like a poor answer to the OPs question. Especially considering many shooters find that Wolf Gold is more consistently loaded and more accurate than XM193. If you are just shooting minute of man at under 100 yards in the end just about anything is accurate enough.

Now I am not disputing your use of XM193 or that it isn't decent ammo. I have about 2500 rounds of if currently. Last time out at the range I shot about 300 rounds of IMI. I have more and when it is price properly I will get more. Its not about how I spend my money or how you spend yours its about answering the question of what is the best price for 223/556, assuming brass cased ammo that is accurate and consistent, delivered.

Is your answer still $.44 IMI?

I threw an option out there. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's your money and your choice.

I've been buying cases of Fiocchi 55 gr. FMJ from a nearby
LGS that carries case quantities of most major handgun and
rifle calibers. It is just over 300 bucks per 1000.
I'm good with that and it shoots well in my AR's
Good clean ammo.

Good, because arguments are what get threads locked and I'd hate to see that.

Another decent deal right now is Geco 223 at SGammo. $309 + shipping $15. This is Swiss made ammo and is pretty accurate for most people and it burns clean. Above Wolf Gold and M193 etc...

This ammo is on stripper clips but these clips will not work in AR15 mags. It was setup for Sig 550 or STGW 90s so you have to remove it to load in AR15 mags. But if you have a StripLULA tool they will go in or you can modify a USGI tool.

+1 on the Geco......the price jumped up a bit lately but this is as good an ammo for the money I have found........with the political climate the way it is I ordered another 1000 rounds at the expense of a sweet 4506-1 I spotted at a show this past weekend.........PS..those plastic stripper clips suck
