Default 38 S&W Ammo

I am trying to find a dealer who sales a 110gr JHP for 38 S&W. I ordered some from Ammunition Supply Co. and they sent 38 special. I have 145 gr. RN but wanted a JHP Winchester shows they make it but I can't find anyone who sales the ammo.

Sounds like you want high performance ammo. Check out Buffalo Bore and Cor-Bon. Solid frame swing out cylinder revolvers only, those loads are not for the break tops!

I really don't think any of the major ammo makers (W-W, R-P, Federal or Speer) ever made any JHP loads in .38 S&W. I've never seen any, old or new. About all I have seen is 145 RNL from R-P and W-W. I've got an old box of Browning brand but it is 40 years old and somebody made it for Browning.

You will have to go to one of the boutique makers like others already suggested to find anything like you want.

Remember that, aside from Buffalo Bore, all major manufacturers load only rather mild .38 S&W loadings using a 146-48 grain lead bullet. This is because of the millions of old, weak top-break .38 S&W revolvers from the 19th and early 20th centuries still out there which could come apart with more powerful loads. Reloading is the only way to get top performance from the .38 S&W. It is not difficult to duplicate .38 Special ballistics with any bullet type and weight by reloading PROVIDED you fire it ONLY in a modern solid-frame revolver, such as one of the WWII .38/200 British service revolvers, not something like a S&W .38 DA from 1890.

I ordered 2 boxes of 38 S&W from Buffalo Bore and I will see how they do. I didn't know the 38 S&W was to weak to shoot a JHP but reading articles online I now understand why they don't make it. I believe Ammunition Supply just didn't put the special in their listing on the ones I ordered.

I am curious as to the revolver you are going to shoot. And, don't you know the post pics rule?

Default 38 S&W Ammo

Just purchased some PPU (Privi Partizan) from an ammo supplier at a gun show in Phoenix. 145gr. lead round nose. Paid just under $19 for 50 rounds.

The Winchester JHP was 110gr. and I thought it would have less recoil for my wife and it would be penetrate better with higher velocity. I may be thinking wrong

I now understand what you are looking for. Unfortunately there has been no development on the 38 S&W because it was outdated by the .38 Special long ago. The pressure limits were just too low to make using HP bullets effective.

If you reload you can load some ammo that will work better than anything you can buy without putting you revolver in danger. Maybe you can have them made for you using a Speer short barrel 135gr bullet or a soft 158gr LSWC/HP bullet.

You have your work cut out Sir, sorry...

Thanks, I think I will see how the Buffalo Bore does and not try to invent something that probably would never work.

I like the JHP for mags. The rest, nothing like a nice chunk-0-lead.
I reload for two .38 S&W top breaks. The Enfield uses the .361 200gr, but the Webley slugged out at .357, so I use .358 158gr from Missouri bullet. I think that's what the S&W barrels would like. You can get em coated too.
Commercial ammo is easy to get, but I think they keep the loads on the light side because of the cheaper top breaks.
Though not the best man stopper, it did a damn fine job on bad guys for many score years.

I have 2 loads for the .38 S&W. One is made with a 170gr RFN cast bullet and the other attempts to replicate the old 38/200 British load. The 170gr load is fairly potent with minimal recoil. The 38/200 load is just plain fun to shoot. I have never sent any over a Chrono but I doubt it pushes the bullet over 600 fps lol.

To me the S&W was made for lead bullets.
