Question 45 HP Ammo

It's made by Prvi Partisan for countries that won't allow military ammo for civilians. This stuff has a 1mm shorter case than standard 45 ACP, aka 45 Short. It's recommended only for DA revolvers like my S&W M25-14 and M22-4. J&G Sales has it for only $0.16 a round. We're talking $150 for a case of 1000rds with 230gr, copper jacketed, lead core, non-corrosive ammo. While it's not a deal killer the shipping is just over $50 which puts the price per round at about $0.20 which is still less than 1/2 of what comparable 45 ACP is selling for BEFORE shipping is added.

Anyone tried any of this stuff yet? At $10.25 per 50rd box shipped I don't know that I want to pass on some even if I don't actually NEED any ammo at the moment.

Hirtenberger Patronfabrik used to make this round and Fiocchi still makes it for their domestic market because 45ACP is verboten in Italy. The 45HP used to be quite expensive compared to standard 45ACP. Don't know how well it'll work in auto pistols though.

I'd be using it in revolvers. The ad says it can only be used in autos chambered for it. IIRC the 45ACP head spaces on the case mouth so even though the ad says they load it to match the OAL of the 45 ACP I suppose the shorter case would head space differently though you'd think 1mm wouldn't be that big a difference.

Yes, I have 5,000 rnds. It came yesterday by UPS and mine was less than $10.00 per box 3,000 fmj and 2,000 sjhp all delivered for less than $1,000.00. I shot both, today. No groups or chrony, but I am tickled PINK. I shot them through my "Jovino" cut down 25-2. Clips must be used but that is no surprise. The 185gr sjhp shot noticeably lower and gave less recoil. I am very glad I bought this. the only down side is I really don't have enough storage. The cases look like they would reload OK and I have used .38spl brass from these folks, it was good brass. I would recommend this product, especially to people with moon clip guns, who don't reload. It is shorter OAL than .45acp, by the difference in the length of the cases.

Member reddog81 mentioned this in the Revolver section. "1917 DA .45 Ammo ?". I want to thank him again for the heads up...........

A snip it of history:
American Rifleman | The .45 HP Load

It seems all you needed was a barrel in Colts and S&W autos - now that would be a rare pistol to "letter" from the "mother ship"
Does anybody have one of the Italian pistols?
