Default Cheap Ammo?

Was in a gun shop this week and noticed they dont allow or suggest people use 4 brands of ammo. Remington, Winchester, Federal, and Spectra.

Ive always carried Remington HP and used Winchester just for shooting.

Anyone ever hear to stay away from those 4 brands?

No but a lot of guys get hung up on a few posts or know issues. They may read/hear or experience a few problems and immediately assume it's all bad. Where in reality those few problems are 1, 2 or 3 in millions.

I've heard that WWB can have some reliability issues.

I recall reading there was an issue with some lots of Federal FBI loads that weren't crimped properly. I don't know how prevalent that was or if it's been corrected.

The only issue I can recall having with major brand ammo was with some Remington .38 Special 125gr enclosed-base FMJ ammo that was designed specifically for indoor range use. I had some cases split on me. Remington reimbursed me for the ammo. I'm willing to consider that more of a fluke than an indictment of their QC.

Only from people trying to sell me what they had stocked.
Caveat Emptor
Any company can make a substandard batch. The good US companies will replace substandard ammo.

I've tested and chosen Federal Personal Defense in .380/9mm/.357/12ga, so I bet my life on it, in all my guns. It consistently makes tight groups at point of aim.

That raises questions about any other suggestions they may make.

Sure some are dirtier than others, but during the worst of the ammo drought I was paying $53 / 100 for WWB .45 ACP FMJ, and happy to get it. Never had any FTF. Long calm afternoon cleaning guns? Yes, there was that.

They told me it was an insurance issue. Their insurance company said they didn't trust the brands, thus wouldn't allow it on their range and wouldnt suggest buying it.

Just thought it was odd.

That is odd. I don't think I've ever been to a range that restricted factory ammo by brand. I can see this being an issue with handloaded ammo, and have seen ranges prohibit handloaded ammo, but not factory ammo.

I'm not sure how long a gun range in the good ol' USA can stay open if they outlaw Federal, Remington and Winchester. They must have cornered the market on some Tula.

I have shot all of that except the spectra stuff and used it all my life - shoots fine for me, guess I'd not go to that range, but nicely tell them that they have lost a customer. Although you might be forced to use them due to distance, etc

What brand ammo do they sell to shoot on the range?

Thumbs down

I have had issues with WWB 5.56 55 gr.
When I bought my Sport 1 a few years ago I tried some WWB 55 gr 5.56 ammo and it would FTF. So, I never bought it again......until just recently. When I bought my Ruger AR-556 I decided to try some WWB again. Guess what? Same situation. This time I am TOTALLY DONE with WWB!

That's very odd. Like others have mentioned I'd be suspect of anything they say. Those are some of the most popular brands out there. They might as well ban all brands of ammo. If what they say is true their insurance agent is an idiot.

I think someone is full of bovine excrement.

No way is an insurance carrier going to try to specify which brands of ammo to sell. The liability for REQUIRING the use of certain brands is higher than it would be for ALLOWING specific brands - even if those brands had a bad reputation - which those brands don't (necessarily). Your choice - your liability.

If there were a bad round of the brand they required and it caused someone's gun to blow up or whatever they'd be on the hook for it far more than if they just let people shoot whatever commercial brand they like. Any insurance company lawyer is going to recognize that. THEIR choice - their liability.

I'm thinking it has more to do with what has the best profit margin - which would undoubtedly be the brand they are trying to sell you INSTEAD of those major brands..

Let me guess......They have plenty of "their brand" of ammo they will sell you for use on their range? Because companies like Remington, Winchester, and Federal, that have been around for generations, don't know how to make safe ammo...

Shooters in the U.S. shoot more Winchester, Remington and Federal* ammo than all the other brands combined. Whoever in that shop told you that story is either stupid or dishonest or completely inexperienced in firearms matters or a combination of them all.

You would be hard-pressed to find an American police department of any size that issues anything not made by those companies. The U.S. military only uses foreign made ammo because they can't get sufficient ammo made to military specs here.

*Speer and CCI are owned and managed by the same company that owns Federal. ATK/Alliant. I consider them to be the same company as they exchange product and components with each other as they each need.

That was me. Bought a case of it. C-J occurred only in aluminum-frame lightweights so I restricted it to steel-frame guns. Can offer no further info.

Default Wow!

I just love a humorous story first thing in the morning. I think you can solve the "ammunition" problem by finding a different gun shop. I'm amazed at how many authoritarians work in gun shops.

As to the rest, your LGS is full of xxx stuff.
