Wal-Mart ammo score
A friend gave me a "heads up" on some ammo at W-Mart. So, I get up out of my easy chair and bust it on over there. Mission accomplished: UMC 40cal $25/250rd x 3 boxes ($75), WIN PDX 40cal $5/20rd x2 boxes ($10), PERFECTA 357Mag $9/50rd x2 boxes ($18), REM 44Mag $9/50 x 3boxes ($27) = $130!! I figure it was about $410 reg price. I was pretty much on a "sales purchase high."

They are putting some .40 on clearance. When and what stores varies. You got seriously lucky.

I still remember back in the "good old days" of wooden crates of comblock ammo for practically nothing, the saying used to be: "buy it cheap and stack it deep"!! Words to live by!!
Good for you, LEADPOISON!! Better go back tomorrow and get some more... We may be experiencing some "turbulence", as the aviation folks say. I may run by the local Walmart myself tomorrow.
Best Regards, Les

I went to my local Walmart this past weekend and picked up a brick of CCI .22 standard velocity and a bunch of .223. I was shocked that the guy at the counter was even considering letting me buy all of it. When I was checking out he politely informed me that he didn't care much for the 3 boxes of .22 per customer rule! I was a happy camper.

Five dollars per box of Win PDX?? Holy carp, I wish I lived in the same universe as you guys. In my universe, Wal-Mart rarely has any ammo that I can use, and what little they have is horribly overpriced. I've only bought one box of ammo there, Rem .380, for $20. I normally wouldn't pay that much, but I was so astounded that they had anything at all that I could use, that I bought it simply because I could.

Well, I have sometimes been paying a little more than I should, because the alternative in the near future may be that I won't be able to buy any at all,mat any price, and I feel we need to stock up. I don't believe this is paranoia, but based on our experience over the last decade of ammo shortages. I know from experience that folks panic and buy the shelves bare, and even under the best of conditions, it yap takes time for the ammo companies to restock the shelves of the LGS.
Best Regards, Les

Yeah my Walmart had CCI Stingers for $6.47 and standard velocity for 3.47. I bought a few boxes. Need to check the .44 prices now.

Those 357 and 44 prices are insane! I can't even reload them for that. Sounds like you should have bought a few lottery tickets.

Was at my local WM yesterday. The guy who is knowledgeable said that the clearances were started weeks ago, probably long-finished unless a manager somewhere didn't get around to it, and we should not expect any more before Christmas. Maybe some black Friday stuff, but he has nothing on that yet. General quantity of incoming ammo is very low, except for shotgun shells.
OP just got lucky.

While that may be the case in other areas of the country. In Charlotte, .22 ammo is everywhere. I would say that 3/4 Walmart will have some in stock. Every gun shop has shelved full of it as well as Cabelas, Gander and Bass Pro. So while I am empathetic to your situation, in my area my one purchase will not produce critical failures on any other interested parties.

Ammo sale at wallyworld
Started checking every day at my local since I read this thread. Friday the sporting area guy asked was I looking for anything special (after seeing me 3 times in 3 days). I told him the story, he goes into the back, checks and says come early Saturday. I went today at 0830 and it was my turn!!. Win WDX 38special@$5/20, 20 Ga slugs at 3$ a box of 15, 40 S&W 180 gr jhp @$11/100 and WIN 223 polymer tip varmint and predator $5/20. Other stuff available but I do not shoot 30-30,.270 etc. As it was I spent more than this month's budget in 15 minutes. yeah

Yesterday was hospital / surgeon / oncologist circuit, so had a lot of down time between different facilities. Made the round of 5 WalMarts in the area as I moved from one needle to the next. I suspect we may not see any more Perfecta -
- two had no Perfecta, tags gone, space gone. Mgr said they had no more in the warehouse system and were told not to try to order it.
- one had tags still, all regular price, but same story as above.
- one had pistol calibers marked at deep discount, but no stock. 380 was $5 / 50. 45, if there had been any, was marked $7 / 50.
- one had everything at regular price, but most of the boxes were damaged / oil-soaked. Regular guy said it was the last they would get, but they sold so much they they didn't feel the need to "clearance" price it.

Last week I ran across some Federal 550 bulk packs of .22 for $24.95 apiece. Considered getting some but am pretty well fixed on .22 so left it on the shelf. Went back yesterday and was all gone, but had boocoo Win. 333 & Rem. 100.

Have been buying some Federal.
I'm been paying $24.95 but getting 325s, not 550s!

Hi Forum;
I usually buy ammo at my LGS although never clearance price, but usually "fair" priced and I feel they know what they're doing, and it is always fresh stuff.
Tried Wally World too many times and the "clerks" are normally brain dead or something, at least around here. Last time perusing the sporting goods (read camping supplies at our local WM) a guy was asking for bulk 5.56 and said something like "you know...in a Spam can" Clerk replied Spam is over in groceries! I am really glad I didn't step up and ask for 38 + P..she probably would have sent me towards the restroom! Her T-shirt under the WM vest I guess said it all with the "I'm with her" logo.
Do you think WM is exiting the ammo business altogether? Other WM's in my area look about the same as other posters here, empty shelves or limited stuff that doesn't jive with my caliber assortment.

At least in my area they are not getting out of the ammo business, but it is clear that the Perfecta, which has been reliable and reasonably priced, is gone.
I suspect they (Fiocchi in Italy) are putting all of their product into the Middle East right now.
All but one store have rearranged their ammo cabinets to be behind a counter, possibly security issues? Did not ask, but will next time the opportunity presents itself.

I've also recently seen 325 packs for $19 and 50 rd. Federal boxes for $2.49 so that's $25 per brick but they did have limits on purchase amounts.

I posted above about my .22lr purchase last week but yesterday I returned to the same Walmart and not only was all of the 22 ammo gone but it wasn't even listed or priced for sale. That included 22 mag and Long rifle ammo which they had several boxes of last week. All of the ammo had been rearranged inside the cabinet as well. I don't believe that it all sold out so I'm not sure why it's not for sale anymore???

At my "best" WalMart, all the .22 goes within 2-3 hours if it is a useful round. 22 mag goes in a day. Shorts, Quiet, and the like sit around a few days. News that they have it gets out, and a line forms.

Even I will buy CCI MM that I don't really need at $7 / 100 at WM instead of $10 / 100 at my (unfriendly) LGS. It seems to get turned out to friends who don't have time to shop (at what I paid).
But being as sick as I am, a day at the range now gets spent on the good stuff (9, 38, 5.7, 5.56), as the time I can stand up is short, and the stock need not be left to be sold in a yard sale when I'm gone. If I'm left with a few mags of 147g JHP and a dozen or two 12g / 4, I'm good for those who want to break down the door.

Hoc9, there are a lot of us cancer survivors here on the forum. Hang in there, brother, I see you are LEO also. Sounds like you are doing what you have to, not just to survive, but to enjoy your shooting as well. It's been five years ago for me, but so far, I have remained cancer free. Never give up, and enjoy life.
I used to worry about buying a new revolver (or automatic), thinking about what my sons would do with all my shooting stuff... Well, that's their problem. They both like shooting anyway, so they will figure it out.
Best Regards, Les

IMO it is the purchasers responsibility to know what they want to buy. Trusting a salesman to have knowledge to help you pick out what you need is going to end badly quite often.
My Walmart is usually full and if I need something I point the clerk to exactly where it is

Our Walmart in the Charlotte area are pretty well stocked most days. I can walk in and find Ammo for a caliber I have pretty much every day. I can't always find the exact caliber I want (.38 special just seems to be the hardest to find most days). The thing I have noticed is the lack of the cheaper ammo options. For example Perfecta used to be heavily stocked but over the past month that seems to have dwindled and now I don't even see the sales stickers for where they used to reside. I know it isn't high grade stuff but it served my plinking purposes and better reflected my budget!

Almost always it's being there when the clerks put the ammo on the sheves at my local Walmarts.
This is especially true for .22lr ammo and Perfecta 115gr 9mm
The last time my Walmarts had the Perfecta 9mm was about 6 weeks ago and the 80 boxes were gone in a few hours.
As of today I'm down to 1 box.
Today was the newest shipment to arrive but it had only 18 boxes.
I bought them all at $9.78/50
No 22 ammo on the shelf today at Walmart but Academy has a boat load of Aguila and CCI in a lot of flavors

Picked up 7 boxes of American Eagle .223, 55gr. fmj. for $6.44 per box of 20 today on the way to work. Last week got 5 boxes of Perfecta 55 gr. at $14.97 per 50 rounds.

A few weeks ago, since my daughter's birthday was coming up,we decided to give her a brick or 2 of .22LR.The kid(she's 32)started shooting handguns and really got the bug(much to my pleasure).Went to my local retail store;$46 including govt ripoff(Canada and Quebec total up to 15%).Told the clerk I'd think about it.Went to the WM;$49 before govt ripoff.Went back to my local retail store and said I was done thinking about it and made the purchase!
