.38 Spl 158gr Defense Load
Hi:
Wandering Gander Mountain Sports, I found several boxes of Remington 158 grain LSW-HP +P ammo. I used this ammo back "In The Day". I was not aware this load was still being offered ?

it's still hard to beat the old FBI load. Did you buy any of it? What was the retail price?

Hi:
IIRC $35.00 for a box of 50 rounds ?
** I didn't purchased any but I am serious considering returning and picking up some.
Returned after Thanksgiving Dinner at a fancy restaurant.
$32.99 for a 50 round box

They still make it.........
just wondering it the bullet is still a soft lead or made harder with todays companies?
The old bullet could be marked with your finger nail.
This softness helped in the bullets expansion at lower speeds.
Nice find.

I bought a few boxes (not enough) from Target Sports USA- they had them for around $16.99, I think. The Federal was $3 more. I think both are out of stock now. I'm supposed to be notified when they are back in stock.

From what I read it's not exactly the same load, as the lead alloy is a bit harder, and apparently the velocity has dropped a bit. This may be of most concern to those using 2" barrels, as allegedly the new load won't expand.

I have a few boxes of Federal, a box of Winchester and 3 boxes of the Remington FBI Load. When I carry my M10 or Chief's Special that's what is in them. I know it's old but it still works.

+P model 10
... but can I use it in my model 10?
I'm kidding, I'M JUST KIDDING
I spent much of the day reading +P 38 Special Nonsense Regarding Model 10 and found it as entertaining as it was informative

The NEW Remington, Winchester and Federal "FBI" Loads are NOT what they were back in the day. Their +p is now what their standard velocity used to be. I am NOT stating this just because I read some blogs, but because I own a Chronograph and have tested them many times. Once in a while you will get a hotter lot than most, but at beast I will label the new ammo INCONSISTENT.
If you want the REAL MOTHER OF ALL FBI LOADS, go with Buffalo Bore #20A. Out of a 2" Chief's Special you will get over 1,000 fps! If that is too hot for you, then go with BB standard velocity 158 LSWCHP which is HOTTER than the Remington, Winchester and Federal +P's are.
Another great & proven round is the 135 grain +P Short Barrel Speer GDHP which does not have nearly the M/E of the BB load, but is a reliable expanding load.
I have pretty much written off Remington and Winchester for SD ammo - except for their Shot Shells. Those seem to be the last product they make that is still to this date for me - reliable. YMMV
As AACD above states, if you have "vintage Rem & Win FBI ammo" that has been properly stored I would trust that over what they are currently producing. Properly stored ammo has NEVER failed me regardless of its age.
And last BUT NOT LEAST, A Chronograph is a relatively inexpensive tool in determine what ammo to use for SD. Nothing like seeing results vs hype with your own eyes!

Underwood and Buffalo Bore NON +P are the contemporary equivalent loads for the old FBI load. The recipe was changed by Remington and it's not the same thing anymore.
Personally I roll with Underwood because the price is better. Sign up for their newsletter and you'll get codes for free shipping every so often.

Hello Chief.
I've ran both of those 158gr. BB loads and am wondering what you chrono'd the standard pressure at?
Paper and steel thus far, no opportunity for a real world test.
Boxes read 850 fps standard, 1000 +P

My actual Chronograph results out of my 2" M60-7 are as follows.
#20A +P version = 1015 to 1025 fps.
#20C Standard Velocity version = 860 - 865 fps.
These results are very repeatable and very consistent with superb accuracy.
