I'll Make This Real Simple.
The "best cartridge for this or that" debate can go on for ever. Not trying to start a long debate here, just a simple question.
What's the better bullet from a .44 magnum for white tail deer?
A 240 gr. hard cast, SJHP or SJSP (soft point) both also being 240 gr.

Any of the above at adequate velocity with proper placement would work well. Too slow and the expanding bullets might not, and too fast puts lots of energy on the far side (probably OK if it has already passed through a vital area).

a 240 grain LSWC over 10 grains of Unique would be my choice-some like them gas checked.

I prefer 240 grain XTP. I am comfortable shooting out to 100 yards and I know they perform very well on deer at that distance.

The XTP bullets have a good reputation for this work, as does a good sharp shouldered hard cast lead bullet. Both should do good work at reasonable ranges. If you prefer a jacketed bullet, my pick would be a good soft point with the widest meplat you can find. As has been said, through and through is OK if something vital has been hit inside.

The answer is simple. From a .44 mag revolver a cast SWC or JHP with
full power handloads or factory ammo. Leave the midrange handloads
with Unique or other powders for plinking. From a .44 mag rifle a JSP
is best at full or nearly full power. Cast bullets may lead bores at rifle
velocity and JHPs may come apart on deer at rifle velocity.

As long as the shot placement is reasonable, a deer is not real hard to bring down with either one. I suppose the SJSP would be the way I'd choose, but would feel comfortable with the Lead bullet if the other was unavailable.

Down in Southern MO, shots are rarely over 25 yards. I have killed a truck load of deer with a 44 magnum with a 240 LSWC over 7gr of 700X. Out of a 6-6.5" barrel it is running about 985fps.

IMHO, there wouldn't be a dime's worth of difference between the two when used on Whitetail Deer.

I totally agree - and once the bullet exits, it makes no difference which bullet it is... I use the 240 XTP since it is easy to acquire and there will be no leading or gas check issues.
