I am curious to see what Brand of Centerfire Ammo others have found to be the dirtiest they have fired.

Barnaul (Bear brand). I used to shoot a lot of Brown or Silver Bear out of my PTR-91 and it was always a mess afterward. Other Russian ammo isn't much better.

IMO... Most (if not all) of the Russian Steel Cased brands.

1- Fiocchi - that stuff is not only dirty, but its a sticky dirty that takes forever to get out of the gun. I seriously avoid this brand at all costs.

2- pretty much any Russian ammo as mentioned before. I'm not opposed to shooting or buying this.

3- WW2 surplus ammo - I've had a pleasure of shooting, in memory of a shooting buddy's friend who passed.

It's all dirty! You shoot you clean the gun, makes no difference whether the gun is a little dirty or a lot dirty! So what difference does it make???????

Notice that only relatively new shooters ask these questions, while those of us who have been shooting for over 50 years really don't care????????????

PPU seems dirtier than the rest. Haven't shot any Russian ammo tho. I shoot mostly Fiocchi and American Eagle.

Worst stuff I have run was some Magtec lead round nose .38 SP that came in a blue 200 round box. Not only was it filthy on the gun it threw up a huge gray cloud every round. Looked like an old western movie scene every time I fired a round!!! Just Godawful nasty shooting stuff!!!

I'm basically a rookie but I love shooting the Magtech .357 stuff. Yes, It may get my 686 dirty but I just clean it after every session anyway...

So ... Do you think it is bad for a Person to be a "Relatively New Shooter" ?, Or for a "Relatively New Shooter" To ask a question they wish to learn something from ?, ...Or do you just think it was a Dumb Question in the first place and not worthy of an intelligent response ?

I'm curious as to the thought process behind your reply.

I as a "Relatively New Shooter" I have certainly not bought and fired every brand of Ammo on the market to know which is cleaner or which is dirtier and wish to avoid buying any that you personally would avoid buying in favor of other cleaner firing ammo.

It's not a dumb question by any means, but "dirty" is interpreted differently by various shooters. Primary concerns with any ammo should be reliability and accuracy. They are of equal importance. In that light, "dirty" becomes a very secondary factor. A gun requires cleaning whether it has been used to fire "dirty" or "clean" ammo and there is no difference in the effort required for cleaning.

I don't know if I ever considered factory ammo to be dirty,but when I first started reloading using cast bullets and shotgun powder-oh my! lol
The worst are my black powder 45 colt loads.One cylinder full and that beautiful Colt SAA is coated in soot

But making soot is very satisfying. : )

The Russian steel cased AK ammo smells like sheep doo.

Before I started reloading, I found PPU ammo very dirty and inaccurate. Magtech was dirty but the accuracy was good. On the other hand, I thought PMC ammo was very clean and accurate. American Eagle was pretty good too.

I'm not sure about the comments that this is a dumb question. I found that the dirty ammo takes about 5 minutes longer to clean per gun than clean ammo. Some people like to keep their guns cleaner than others.

Dirtiest ammo out there is my cast bullet reloads with home made bullet lube. No leading, lots of dirt on the gun and smoke in the air. My center fire ammo is cheaper than 22 LR per 50 rounds no matter what caliber I shoot including 44 mag.

I'm still shooting pre-Obama primers and powder with range pickup brass, cast bullets made from mining lead / jacketed bullets at the outdoor range. If I'm saving all this ammo money, maybe I should buy store-bought commercial bullet lube -- nahh !! -- I still have 8# of bees wax and lots of additives. I don't have a bug problem at the range!

With a few exceptions, everything I've fired who's name has the name of a metal or an animal in it had been pretty dirty and kind of stinky too.

The all time dirtiest ammo I have ever used was M&D re-loaded .38 Special 148 grain Wad Cutters. I use to shoot this stuff almost 40 years ago before I reloaded. You would swear they used floor sweepings added into their powder! After firing 100 rounds my clothing, hands, and even my nose hairs were coated with residue! NOT good stuff and they went out of business years ago. The only good thing was this stuff was CHEAP! People would routinely ask if I was shooting Black Powder.

I've got a rifle that shoots Armscorp .22 TCM. Dirtiest damn powder I have ever seen. Takes a lot of elbow grease to clean away the residue.

Tullo, the Bear and other steel case ammo are dirtier than many other brands. I prefer not to buy either even if they are a bit cheaper.
I agree Fiocchi is another dirty ammo. But often some harder to find calibers are found more often made by Fiocchi.
Some cheaper brand ammo makes a flash and smoke screen as well. From what I read the cheaper ammo doesn't have additives to prevent flash and smoke.

Funny how some will not shoot dirty ammo but others say they don't care. I have heard experienced shooters go either way so being a new shooter is moot in this regard. The OP asked a question which didn't deserve being flamed when just an answer would have been enough.
