Default Recommended ammo for Ruger S/A...

Recently purchased a Ruger Single Six which came with only the .22 WMR cylinder...I am not familiar with that round whatsoever, so I was hoping for ammo recommendations. Seen a number of different manufacturers, bullet grain, varmint-type rounds...what would be a good practice round? Thanks in advance.

Hate to be so brutal, but the real answer is "whatever you can find".

I've used various Winchester, CCI, and Hornady rounds. I've heard bad things said about the European stuff (S&B in particular).

WMR is still really tough to find at a decent price. You might want to look into getting a .22 LR cylinder and getting it fitted. I was offered a box of 200 at ~$52 this weekend at Academy (guy there is always looking out for what I need). I passed on it. That is up from $44 for the same quantity, different packaging, a year ago.

When I got mine,I bought some Hornady and some Winchester ammo in .22Mag.The first one shot pattern while the second one was shooting good groups.Try the same and I wouldn't be surprised if your gun would give the opposite...you'll just have to experiment a bit.22s are probably the most temperemental guns out there(maybe the .17 is worse...I don't know I don't own one!).
BTW,with the regular .22LR cylinder,my gun groups best with .22 short!!!!Those 22s are just a little less temperemental than a mother in law who skipped lunch!

How does one get a cylinder fitted...should I send it to Ruger for the proper cylinder? I guess timing and everything needs to be covered by experienced folks, a drop in replacement cylinder may not be a smart option.

If you're looking to shoot varmints in California, unleaded is your only legal choice. Now or soon depending on where you hunt. That makes CCI TNT Green your only choice. Not easy to find, and not cheap when found. $15.99 per box is about as good as I've found.

I had a Ruger single six with both cylinders. Never had any problems swapping them out and working.
Just make sure you don't push the ejector rod too far in with the magnum cylinder.

I shot 22 longs most of the time but would use the Magnums when we would shoot at longer ranges. A water ditch from the gravel road was about 50 yards and the magnum would drop less and up your odds when you learned how it shot out of your revolver.
Back then most of the ammo was by Winchester but there are more today if you can find them.

The 22WMR ammo is extremely expensive and very LOUD! The ammo came out around 1960 and never has been a big seller. Kind of a circular problem.....if the ammo wasn't so expensive people would buy more but they don't so prices stay high.

I think you should definitely call Ruger and discuss a second cylinder....be sure and have the serial # handy. Ruger rarely made 22 WMRs without a 22 LR cylinder. I wouldn't worry about just dropping in a used cylinder in a single action Ruger.

Regards
