Ammo prices
Anybody know where I can buy some 40 sw at a reasonable price? Either that or what's a general good guideline as far as cost per round?

IMO somewhere around 25 cents per round is a decent price on 40's lately for brand name FMJ stuff. Now that the scare is over prices should start coming back down a little once more ammo is back on the shelves. My go to is SGAmmo and typically I buy it by the case. Currently I'm sitting on over 4k of 40's with enough components to reload them a couple times.

I want to get into reloading but I can't swallow the initial cost at the moment.

You haven't included your locale, so can't tell if your in a restricted state, but SGAmmo has case lots of S&B 180FMJ at .25 per round.

Buy the tools and parts you need over time. This includes components, powder, primers
And get a good reloading manual, study and learn it. Many data manuals have good "how to'' sections in the front.
Start saving brass.

As RW said - at a minimum start with a good manual and really study up on reloading. lots of new equipment and processes and procedures vary according to your specific needs, calibers and capacities you plan to reload.

40 seems to be stagnant at .25 per round shipped. 9mm steel case is down to about 0.16 per round shipped and brass cased to 0.19 per round shipped. I'm not sure what is taking 40 so long to drop

Not too many years ago when other ammo was thin on the shelves my local Sportsman's Warehouse had literally PALLET quantities of .40 - and it wasn't moving very fast.

If you don't want to buy in bulk right now, this is a good price for .40 S&W. $12.99 a box. 26¢ a round shipped with the discount code SH1394. That's the non-member price. Club members can get it for less than 25¢ per round.
GECO, .40 S&W, FMJ, 180 Grain, 50 Rounds - 293842, .40 S&W Ammo at Sportsman's Guide

What is a "reasonable price" to you? Anything under $14 a box is good for range ammk. Buy in bulk it will be cheaper
Target Sports USA has Blazer Brass 1k rounds for 27 cents shipped

Really I'm trying to see an average price per round. I'm really new to the 40 market. I can normally get 9mm for around 18 to 19 cents around I can get 50 ae for about a 88 cents a round and so on. So what's the average for 40? What's a good number for it

Save your brass and invest $28.50 in a Lee Classic Loader.
A lot of us got started in reloading with one. Affordable and you can turn out very good ammo with one.
When times get better you can upgrade with a press .

You better make sure you can get your components locally. So many places that used to carry them have quit doing so for one reason or another that it's not quite the option that it was even ten years ago.
If you need to get your components shipped, it has become so expensive with all the chickenshirt rules like extra hazmat fees on top of already high shipping fees. And the last time I was reloading they could not ship powders and primers together in the same order so those had to come in separate overpriced shipments. Jacketed lead bullets are also no longer cheap.
I enjoy reloading with a Lee Loader and even a nutcracker press, but these days you need to price it both ways and be realistic about how much you're going to shoot. It may be to your advantage to wait for ammo sales online and flat rate or free shipping instead of the potential hassle and expense of accruing all the separate parts.

Yea i think 'single digit' priced ammo is a thing of the past - even for 9mm.

Yeah I'd say so. Although I came across a box of lead 38 special for 9.00 a box. I asked about it and they said they weren't going to be carrying that brand anymore

I don't have anything in 38 so I left it for someone else. But that's the lowest aside from .22 mag I've seen in a while.

When prices are rising it's good to buy in bulk but when prices are stable or dropping the bulk buy is not the way to go.
To start reloading on a very tight budget consider a used Lee hand press, used Lee Auto Prime and a previously owned Lee 4 die set in your most shot caliber.Used Lee scale along with the above mentioned items can be regularly found on ebay
The hand press and auto hand primer have a second benefit in that they'll help you keep your upper body fit.
A 1lb can of Titegroup powder will run about $20 and be enough for a few thousand rounds.
Primers can be bought for between $3.00 and $4.00 per 100.
Buying 9mm ammo for less than $5.00 a box of 50 after rebate and store coupon only came once this year on Black Friday.
