Default WELL IT FINALLY HAPPENED - CCI

I have touted the CCI brand .22 LR ammo as top dog for a while now and have always found it to be the most reliable of the .22 LR common brands. Well today I actually had 3 rounds (from two boxes) fail on the first trigger pull of a CZ453 American Rifle. The hits were very deep and positive and they did all fire on the second loading when I rotated them 180 degrees, however this was the first time I've experienced CCI failures of any kind. I guess there is a first time for everything.

For those interested, these were the 40 grain copper plated Mini-mags in the 100 round clear plastic sleeves and were just recently purchased.

It turns out there is a first time for everything...

I prefer their plain lead standard velocity ammo, but the mini-mags are some of the best stuff out there. I guess that's one of the downsides to rimfire ammo - even the best stuff has a high defect rate than average centerfire ammo.

Unfortunately, and a little sadly, I couldn't have said it better. Out of a clear plastic 100 round sleeve of CCI 40 grain SV I had two failures to fire on the first primer strike. One round fired on the second strike and one failed to fire on the second strike. And this out of my bolt action Savage that's as reliable as a rent increase.

I still think they are top of the line for inexpensive .22 ammo and my go to choice. Hopefully our lots were made during the same time frame and equipment has since been calibrated. I shoot a lot of .22 and I need to be able to take CCI for granted.

Well, I guess I'm still safe. Back in 1995 we moved to this place. At the time I discovered I still had 19 of the plastic boxes. Not bein' real smart, the ammo can I put them in only got labeled "22s". So there it sat, in the stack. I'm not even sure when I shot the other box. But I discovered the ammo can a while back. Meaning it has to be at least 21 years old now, and probably better. Its in my foggy memory they used to make good ammo back in that time frame. I guess like fine wine, they'll just keep getting better with age.

even a blind hog will find an acorn every now and then,
and while I understand the OP's disappointment in having a couple of rounds fail to ignite.
I would imagine it is almost impossible to not have a few duds from anything that moves as fast as a 22 rim fire ammo line travels.
with all that said, I will still continue to prefer cci over the other brands
value wise.
I don't want to pay the price for the high dollar Ely target grade, when I have found that the standard velocity cci is just as accurate.

We shoot a lot of 22's. Between my wife and I we shoot around 700-800 rounds per week. CCI Mini mags, CCI Blazers, Choot Ems. AR Tacticals, Federal Champions, Winchester 333s, Golden Bullets. I've found Mini Mags to be the most reliable. BUT there are times when they don't fire the first time either. It's just the nature of rimfire ammo.

That's why I cringe when someone says they carry a 22 for SD. Other then someone having a physical problem or are recoil sensitive 22's are just not reliable enough to carry for SD. And I do get it since my wife is one that is recoil sensitive. The gun we have in the house for her when I'm not around is a M & P 22C. I've tried to move her up in caliber but it just doesn't work. But she has become pretty good with it since she shoots it so much so it's better then nothing.

There are quite a few older 32 S&W Long revolvers lying around in pawn shops and LGSs. I'll bet she wouldn't mind the recoil in that. A sweet little cartridge in my opinion.

Best ammo I've found for my rifle is Norma TAC 22. Gives me 7/16" groups at 50 yds.

I like the MiniMags as well. My favorite.

I was at the range today shooting my old Marlin 81 and finished off two 40 year old boxes of Winchester T22's. Still went bang and no misfires. They were left over from when my Dad had the Marlin. I kept the empty boxes for sentimental reasons.

It happens. No big deal.
Only a person who EDC's a .22 pistol needs to worry
if that's their ammo of choice. Sooner or later you all
will run into a bad batch of factory ammo. No matter
the maker.

Question: Do the high priced Target ammo (Eley) and
others, go thru a special check process to ensure reliability?
Any differences in production or QC compared to the
affordable stuff we all shoot everyday?

I am under the impression that Eley ammo is "double spun primed" so the primer material has double the chance of getting applied properly and fully. At least this is what I have been told.

Contact CCI and let them know what happened. These manufacturers like to know when issues occur and they will most likely reimburse you after sending them the rest of the ammo or the box that was left. This way they keep track and continue to make better production ammo for us. I've never had anything go wrong with CCI or Hornady rimfire but there's always a first time.

Default QC just ain't there...

QC just ain't there any more. Manufacturers and consumers both are more interested in cheap.

Ain't that the truth. I've been shooting .22's since the early 1960's. Other than fairly common issues with Remington (their stuff has been a disappointment for years and years), I have yet to have an issue with CCI, Winchester, Federal, et al.

Until now........

Recent purchases of many of the others have yielded squibs, empty cases (no bullet) and pops (not bangs).

I HAVE contacted the manufacturers and even got refunds, but having to do that is a pita.

I had 6 or 7 duds with the 300 rd box of CCI Tacticals I just got through. On the other hand, I've gone through 3 whole .22 leagues with CCI Stds in my Volquartsen Scorpion with no "alibis," and that's 1800 rounds.
