9mm range ammo

Just curious on what everyone uses really. Today I picked up some blazer brass 9 mm 115 gr, good stuff IMHO 350 rounds through my sd9ve and no issues plus I seemed pretty accurate with it. I usually use heavier grain ammo since I can get it from a good friend of mine for cheap as heck.

I went to the range today and ran 100 rounds of Winchester Target Match 9MM I picked up at Dick's on sale. This is the first ammo that my SD9ve did not like. Out of 100 rounds I had 8 misfires. 3 times a failure to eject. Bad stuff. I usually use Herters from Cabela's,but I also use Remington and Blazer with not one issue.

Whatever is cheapest. Some ammo is dirtier than others but a quick cleaning afterwards fixes that problem

I go the bargain/best price available route, but stick to brass cases, and prefer new over reload. I figure they might be a little safer, and generally run a little hotter. If I have a choice, I try to get 124 grain over 115, but that's often not available.

I also like European over US manufacturer; I'd LOVE to buy American, but in my experience the US stuff is downloaded, and the European makers load it hot (or, to normal specs?).

*Note- I prefer the hotter loads and 124 grain because I have fullsize metal pistols, such as a Beretta 92 and a CZ 75. Just my opinion, it seems more accurate and cycles a little better.

My general preferred order is Sellier and Bellot, then Prvi Partisan (PPU), then Fiocchi. Herter's (Cabela's) is rebranded Sellier and Bellot, Monarch (Academy) brass is rebranded PPU.

That said, I look for $200 or less per 1000 rds, and have taken Blazer Brass at that point.

I bought Aguila 124 gr FMJ when it was a good price (think it was $8.99 a box + s/h). This has shot fine, they have a crimp in the case that disappears when shot. I wouldn't hesitate to buy these again, if the price is right.

My current choice is Yavex 124 grain FMJ (at Bud's for $261 per case of 1450, or 29 boxes at $9 a box, + s/h). At that price, it's cheaper than Freedom reman's.

Yavex is made in Turkey and is NATO spec with sealed primers and cases. I've shot a couple of boxes with no failures, and nice snappy recoil. So far, so good with this.

I have used Federal Aluminum case 115 Gr 9mm for about 500 rounds no issue with my 9MM Shield or Ruger SR9E, for the past 3k rounds I have been using Freedom Munition 9mm 115,124, 147 assorted bullets no issues

I use a lot of freedom munitions 5.56, not so much their 9mm I'm not exactly sure why. Is there reman 9mm pretty good? Does the load feel low or hot ect?

UMC 115 or 124 because Dunham's gets that by the pallet. $10/box on sale. Not a high volume 9mm shooter so I haven't gotten motivated to reload it.

I generally use cheap federal champion range ammo from walmart. starting to use PMC Bronze, Blazer Brass. some Magtech ammo. I have about 400 rounds of Winchester white box left and once i finally finish it off that'll be the last Winchester range ammo i purchase. Too many bad rounds and weak ejection. Maybe someday i will get into reloading and save some money in the long run.

I ran through about 300 of white box when I first got my sd9ve, had no issues with it. Blazer works pretty good, but I sort of expected that since it comes from spreer/cci. I didn't really care for magtech just because of the price, I felt like I could have gotten more rounds with similar quality for around the same price tag that the lgs had it for. I've ran through some pmc xtac 556 in my ar but that's about the extent for pmc for me. I don't think I've ever seen federal champion in 9mm, I've shot a lot of federal champion in 22 though.

Do they still sell the perfecta? Every time I look for some they're out of stock. I've heard good things about it. Some have told me it's similar to fiocchi or is made by them or something along those lines. I keep seeing federal ammo on here and I can't say I've ever shot federal 9mm. PPU, UMC, Blazer Al, Blazer Brass, Aguila, Fiocchi, MagTech, Federal, Pierce, Wolf, Armscor, Monarch Brass, and several brands of commercial reloads. I'm not a fan of WWB or S&B. I have had inconsistent loads (no squibs or kabooms, but some very light loads and a few heavier than average) from Legendary Ammo commercial reloads, so I don't buy from them any more. Other commercial reloads I've tried have been good to go.

I tend to buy by price, but I am staying away from steel cased pistol rounds now. They make the action of a couple of my pistols feel sluggish. They function okay, but I think the increased friction of the steel cases compared to brass slows the slide down a bit. Could be my imagination, but I don't think so.

I've had good luck with Federal American Eagle and Winchester White Box. I bought 1000 rounds of each before I started reloading. Now I have a good supply of brass.

Federal goes off 100 per cent of the time in my highly tuned revolver. Winchester, not so much. The primers are too hard for my light trigger pull.

I sometimes wonder why I don't shoot it more, and then I go back and check the prices... their cheapest remans are listed at over $0.19 a rd; $197 or so a case or 1000, + shipping. I've been able to find new manufactured ammo at that price point.

I got in on the 500 rd box deal of 45 ACP from Freedom earlier this year, it was their new manufactured 230 gr RN ammo, for something like $115 + shipping. I also have Blazer Brass in that caliber and shoot it through my 1911, and I found them about equal. No problems with either thus far, but I don't shoot it a bunch, I shoot a lot more 9mm.
Freedom's ok stuff, but I wouldn't pay the same or more than I would from a bigger manufacturer.

I love freedoms 556 ammo stuff goes bang 100% of the time seems to be accurate as heck, can't tell if it's the ammo, the rifle, or me. But as long as it stays accurate I'll keep getting it. I'll try their 9mm soon if it a. 19 a round that's pretty decent for brass cased ammo

It's ok but for range shooting Blazer does the same thing a little cheaper.

Aluminum has worked fine too, you just can't reload it.

A lot of the ammo manufacturers buy from each other. For instance Tula BrassMaxx is made by Fiochi in Italy. Winchester has at times sold rebranded PPU and IMI. Independence is typically rebranded IMI.

I wouldn't be to concerned with brand as much as how/,if it works in your gun. My guns are not picky so I buy whatever is cheapest or on sale.

Alex Yes Freedom does have reloaded 9mm, Really not much cheaper then new, plus I am saving brass as I plan on reloading soon, I just retired and just waiting to fit it in my budget as I also plan on a New truck soon :O

Reloading is not difficult. Don't get tied down with thinking you need the top of the line equipment. An inexpensive press is a good way to start. You also need a scale.

To start I'd buy a Lee Loader. RCBS is great as well. After you learn what you are doing get a better press but I've loaded thousands of rounds on a single stage press.

You can get your components on line or at your local sporting goods store. Cabellas or Bass Pro Shop will have all you need or try your friendly gun store.

Most important investment is a reloading manual. I like Lyman and Lee but have about 6 different manuals. Read them cover to cover for more than just the load data.

That should get you started in reloading.

I like American Eagle and Fiocchi. Fiocchi is a little bit hotter. Both are fairly clean. I wait for a sale and free shipping at Sportsman's Guide and PSA. Around $12 a box is what I usually pay. No tax, and free shipping. It ends up cheaper than Freedom munitions with the shipping. FM ammo seems a bit weak compared to major brands.

As to what reloading press to get, it all depends on how much you want to spend, and how much research you're willing to do. Between reloading manuals, and the many videos & forums on the internet, someone can find just about everything they need to know. But the learning process is required. Reloading can actually be interesting and fun, relaxing, and whatever else. Or...not. Depends on what a person wants to put into it.

As to myself, I went with a more expensive progressive press first (Dillon 650). Then I evolved to a single stage Redding Bog Boss. Between my wife & I, we shoot a lot of ammo. The 650 is for mass production, and the single stage is more for experimentation with different powders, bullets, etc.

A normal day at the desert, results in a coffee can either full, or nearly full of used casings. It's been a long time, since any of my reloads have failed.

Have you thought about buying govt auction brass? Often times a lot of people don't bid on it so it sits and sits for a while but they sell it by weight not by round. A guy I used to run into at the range told me about it when we were talking hand loads, he said once he bought a pallet that weighed around 900 some lbs for about $75 and some change.

It was MIA from my 3 local Walmart stores for a few weeks but last week 2 of the 3 stores had over 50 boxes in stock.

I had about 20 boxes before buying another 10 at $9.79 each.

Federal 115gr aluminum is about $0.20 a box more when in need.

I don't see much in the way of heavier 124gr and 147gr at Walmart at a low price point so I look on my state guntrader for FTF sellers of ammo

It isn't that costly to get into. If you are going to load straight-walled pistol cases, you don't need the biggest, strongest and fastest press. Even adding reloading dies, a bullet puller and caliper, you can get into reloading for under $250.00. If you scrounge your brass and use cast lead bullets, you can probably load for less than half the cost of factory ammo for range use. I guess the question I really need to be asking is if I could do rifle rounds and handgun rounds with the same set up. Or is it just changing out the dies?

It is just changing out the dies and shell holder. Of course you'd need rifle powder and rifle primers. Bottle neck rifle cases need some preparation before loading. They need to be trimmed to the minimum length (after sizing) and deburred inside the case mouth and outside the case mouth to remove the sharp edge. If the cases are military, the little rim (crimp) at the primer pocket needs to be removed. Straight walled pistol cases don't really need any preparation prior to loading. Some folks like to clean the cases before reloading, but it isn't absolutely necessary. A good reloading manual will have detailed instructions (usually in the front of the manual) on the reloading process.

I load my own. Currently loading:

115gr poly coated lead at $0.06 each
4.5gr of Unique at $0.006 per round
Winchester primers at $0.01 each
used brass at $0.02 each

Total cost under $0.10 per round----right at 1/2 of the cheapest stuff I have found retail.

Before everyone jumps all over me wanting to know where to find 1 cent primers and $10 a pound powder, let me explain. I loaded up on components back in the last "Clinton era". The most expensive powder I have was only $12 per pound, and lots of it is still wearing $9.79 price tags. Same story on the primers. Most of what I have are priced at $.99 and the highest priced I have are marked $1.19. I usually don't even factor in the brass for 9mm. You can find it real cheap or free if you scrounge. Just cranked out 400 rounds this morning. If it was not raining and windy I would be out burning some powder. Changing over to 44mag to start loading up for some more fun.

I've definitely considered going to reloading. What's the deal with cast lead bullets- how does one get the lead, melt it, etc? That's what I hear is the biggest cost saver, but it seems like it can be kinda a hassle.

Re Freedom- sorry, I know they work, but I just can't do it for the price.
I just got a case (1000 rds) of S&B for right at $200 shipped. Have got Blazer Brass for that too ($199 + free shipping). Currently have the Yavex 124 gr coming in, 1450 rds for 278 shipped.
These beat the price of Freedom, and they are new.

I dug into Yavex before I bought, this is made by Yavascalar in Turkey, they seem to be the same stuff the Turkish military uses. Sealed case and primers, 124 gr, specs are pretty solid.

That's actually really helpful especially that last bit about manuals having the instructions at the front. I haven't even started looking at manuals any suggestions?

I've liked everything I've gotten from freedom munitions so far. I've never had an opportunity to mess with a glock 19 but I've fired the 17 gen 3 quite a bit. Are they pretty similar?
