Default Aquilla .22LR Std. Velocity Reviews

I can't use hi Velocity .22s in my club's indoor range. The subject Aquilla is about the only thing I can find locally and I can't mail order.

Anyone have any experience with this stuff??

Yes, I've been using it for years in Bullseye competition. Excellent accuracy out of my Walther GSP Expert, and only one FTF in perhaps 50,000 rounds sent downrange. Others on my team who use it have experienced about the same results. Used to get it from CMP for $180/case delivered to my door, but those days are sadly long gone.

Edited to Add/Jan 10: I noticed that some of the following posts comment on the odd smell of Aguila. That's because Aguila, for whatever reason, uses Eley priming compound - works great, smells like a French wh@rehouse (so they tell me - I have no personal knowledge). If you have experience with any of the very high quality Eley ammo the smell will seem like an old friend. (If you're shooting indoors and you can still smell it your range needs better ventilation.)

I had shot a good bit of the Aguila standard velocity without problem, but experienced a number of misfires in the last batch I bought about 8-10 years ago. Only time I can recall that happening, but haven't tried it since.

I normally shoot only CCI standard velocity. I've found the the accuracy of the Aguila standard velocity is a bit below that of the CCI, but the Aguila is cheaper. Overall, it's pretty good ammo and reasonably accurate in most rifles and handguns.

Have shot thousands of rounds of Aguila standard velocity without problem and would highly recommend it. It does smell a bit unusual.

Glad someone else notices that; I was afraid I was having a stroke or something.

Well, since I prefer my lady to smell like Hoppe's #9, as opposed to Chanel #9, I imagine the smell won't be an issue...LOL.

Thanks for all the comments.

PS - I went to today's Gun Show and bought a brick shortly after posting the question. First thing I noticed was that it all fit in my classic K-22 chambers, while recent production Fed and Win won't.

Happy so far - will test it out at the range tomorrow.

Thanks again...

Use it as well.
Its one of my go-to bulk/plinker ammo brands that I will buy.
Does descent out of both my 617 and Browning buckmark contour.
I think it rates better than alot of the bulk stuff out there, but I have not grouped and recorded it.
I am completely done with the federal and Remington (bulk ****).
For my 2 pistols Federal has more FTF/FTE and the remington is absolute garbage

Shoots well in all of my rimfire silhouette rifles..I can shoot about 1 inch groups at 100 meters (10 shot strings) with a rest ...my Remington 541T which seems to like it the best.

It will take down the rams all day long....

Aguila SV functions well in my High Standard and Ruger pistols and my bench rest Remington target rifles.

Yep. Make sure we get that range report. I shoot it in all of my .22lr; K22, Model 34, Model 317 (wife shoots it in that), M&P Compact .22, Model 18.

No issues.

I have fired some but not many. No issues with the few boxes I shot.

No problems here. I recommend it for general use. I also like CCI Standard Velocity.

I have shot cases of this over the past 10 years or so. They also have a Competition and a Match ammo. It's all good.

I was given a box, used it, and could certainly tell it smelled bad. More like rotten eggs to me.

I shoot at two indoor bullseye leagues. All the league pistol shooters say Aguila SE shoots far superior to CCI.

I shoot it in a CZ rifle and a Ruger MKII pistol. Works fine for me. I like it enough I bought 3K of the stuff. I would have bought CCI SV but at the time there was none to be found.

UPDATE:

OK, here's the range report... (not happy)

I shot it in 2 revolvers and 4 semi-autos - a Ruger Mark I, III and IV, plus a High Standard.

Accuracy was good and function was OK....except................

I could only load 5 rounds in the mags. If I tried a full mag (10), they hung up and would FTF, or cause a stovepipe....every time with every gun.

I switched to Federals, and then CCI Mini-Mags and also some old PMC regular velocity, and after 300 more rounds not a single issue. Then went back to the Aquilas and back to the same problem.

It was not a power issue (failing to push the slide back all the way), the rounds simply were sticky in the mag and would not slide up. With the mag out of the gun you could see the problem. 100% reliability if only 5 were loaded at a time. The same issue was not evident with other manufacturers.

I visually inspected and felt the Aquilas and I really couldn't detect any outward physical issue. Dimensions were checked with a mic and there was no difference there either.

(PS - I didn't notice any smell issues, but then again I don't smell too good......LOL.)

well, it's just plinking ammo. no better than automatch but costs more.

poor groups at 25 yards.
as i recall it's not even sv. it's faster than the 1080 fps that is max for sv.
finally, the casing is too thick. i was getting 30% ftf in my single 10, using lite springs that shoot everything else.
i bot a case of this stuff before learning it wasn't really sv, so i was upset.
finally i replaced factory springs n now it works.
i don't like factory springs but i'll keep them until i use this stuff up.
i won't buy it again.
too expensive for plinking n not good enow for serious work.
