Default 15th ed. Ctgs of the World

Looked through the copy that arrived today and was unsuccessful in locating either the 32-44 S&W or 38-44 S&W in it. Surprising because the book is filled with other obsolete and current cartridges from the 19th century.

The book is organised in a way that I personally find hard to use, typically by bullet diameter (no, not caliber, actual bullet diameter). Were these particular cartridges known by other names? Google searches did not offer up any synonyms.

Please no monologues about the 38/44 revolver, I'm referring to the 19th century target cartridges :-)

There are lots of old and odd cartridges not shown in COTW. COTW is a good general reference, but there are others far more detailed and complete. Donnelley's Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions has data listed on far more cartridges than COTW does, and it still doesn't contain nearly all of of what's out there. If you are really interested in cartridge history, you need to get onto the International Ammunition Association's website and join. The bimonthly journal alone is well worth the modest annual dues.

Rednichols,

The only real reference I have ever seen for these cartridges is contained in the book cited in post 14 of this thread: What to shoot? "U.S. Cartridges and Their Handguns" by Charles R. Suydam. There is a typo on the .32-44 page, it shows the cartridge as the .33-44!

Either .32 S&W Long (If you don't mind some case bulge.) or .32-20 brass could be trimmed to 1.00" and used in the .32-44. Based on listed dimensions for the .38-44 the .357 Maximum case will probably work for this one when trimmed slightly. The .357 Maximum is ca. 1.600" while the .38-44 is 1.480 +/-.

Note these cartridges are described using - between the elements instead of a / as when describing the 1929 .38/44, at least in common practice.

I think they are both listed in the #8 edition, the newest one I have.

Thanks so much, but I'm not wanting to reload these calibers. I bought the book to have the historical information about these old cartridges and found the rimfires I was looking for but neither of the "-44" cartridges.
