Ammo Question
A possibly dumb ammo question. Is 44 Special ammo the same as 44 S&W Special? I intend to shoot the ammo in a Model 29 which can handle 44 Magnum.
Thanks!

.44 Spl is a favorite of mine. For SD I prefer the Win Super-X 200-gr JHP though it has proven difficult to find these days. Hornady 180-gr XTP is another good load also (IMO). Both would do well in a Model 29!

As you see yes, they are the same.
.38 S&W Special and .38 Special are also the same. Many just shorten the name with both cartridges to make it easy to say/write.
OK, where are the photos of your M29?

That plus some companies dislike putting their competitions name on the firearms they sell.

I was thinking about writing that too when I posted but left it off. That is very true especially with Colt. Colt went so far as to duplicate the .38 S&W cartridge and rename it the .38 Colt New Poilce.

I had a mentor that said "there ain't no dumb questions, but there are lots of dumb answers". I learned a lot from that man.

Just learned that 44 Remington Magnum = 44 Magnum.
Even at my advanced age you can learn something every day. Unfortunately sometime you learn something today because you forgot it yesterday!

It's unusual that I use anything other than .44 Special in my M29. I don't need nor want to shoot full .44 Mag loadings, but it's nice to have that option.

I have 4 .44s. Two 629s (6.5" and 3" Talo), a Charter Arms Bull Dog and a Smith 24-3. It's my favorite round, very accurate and great for defensive carry. You will thoroughly enjoy shooting the .44 sp in the 29. Enjoy!

Marlin came up with the name .30-30 because they refused to put .30 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) on their rifles.

What is dumb is to assume and go ahead with your assumption.
If we ever get to where we know it all, then we can't remember it.
I'm 82 and have owned both Marlins and Winchesters, but I never
knew what M. E. Morrison posted above. We never get to old to
learn something.
Keep asking questions.
