Default Hornady Custom .38 Special 158 gr. XTP?

Anyone running Hornady Custom .38 Special 158 gr. XTP in subnose revolver? Not +P.

Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Ammunition :: Handgun :: Choose by Caliber :: 38 Special :: 38 Special 158 gr XTP®

I would expect they are too slow to expand out of a subnose (rated by Hornady at 800 fps at muzzle but for a longer barrel). But would they still work acceptably in a subnose in a way similar to a semi-wadcutter?

Opinions?

I use these for speed strip reloads for a revolver loaded with the 158 grain LHP +P loads. Bullet noses get mashed when I put the LHP rounds in a strip loose in my pocket.
Out of a 2" gun, expansion is not something I count on. Getting hits where I want them and getting enough penetration is my concern. A reasonable bullet in the right spot gets about the best you can expect from a one hand gun.

Thanks guys! Riley31, I saw the video before (thanks!) but are we sure we talk about the same ammo? The XTP bullets are the same but are the loads the same as well? Mine have brass cartridges (yellow), in the video they have nickel plated cartridges (silver).

Mine have #90362 on the box. Same as listed by Hornady at Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Ammunition :: Handgun :: Choose by Caliber :: 38 Special :: 38 Special 158 gr XTP® as item number.

Do you have the same?

Thanks again!

As far as I know it's the only 38 special 158 grain Hornaday XTP round. But I could be wrong

With human skin, it would probably stop inside of 18".

Good thing about a revolver, is if..........
the first two don't work, you have at least three more to back you up.

This is mine look like. They are sold under the "Custom" label. Speaking of kick, when I shoot them from my S&W J frame subnoses they do not feel having more recoil or blast than regular target practice .38 Specials (such as Remington UMC and Federal 130 gr FMJ).

I carry Fiocchi Extrema, both use the XTP bullet. I don't think the standard pressure 38 has enough velocity to dependably open up so I use a lighter weight bullet in +P only.

I have +Ps and .357s as well. But I am very interested by this standard pressure load. Unfortunately I cannot test it myself in jugs of water, ballistic gel or else - the only place where I can afford to shoot currently is at an indoor range. As that I like how it shoots.

Would be great to hear if other people have experience with it out of snub revolvers.

Thanks everyone

I've shot a few of these rounds through my 642's and some of my 4 inch revolvers too. I think it's a good round. In the video posted above I believe he did get some expansion from a snub nose revolver.

The last time I bought some of these rounds I bought them from Freedom Munitions...cheaper than Hornady and their specs show them slightly faster, which might help expansion out of a snub. I keep them on hand as my back up self defense rounds. I generally use Speer Gold Dot 135 grains in my .38's for self defense rounds though...seems to have the best track record from what I've read. I would not feel bad with the Hornady's loaded up though.

That gun in the video is a taurus. So obviously, the load in question would work even better if fired from a Smith.

The hornady custom 158gr xtp 38 spl round is what I carry in my mod 19-4 2 1/2". It is very accurate. I don't use the same ammo in all my carry guns, because I feel accuracy trumps any advantage a more ft#'s might provide.

Sound logic, to which I subscribe.
