Question 9 mm Hydra-Shok Q?

I prefer to use Federal Premium Hydra-Shok ammo as my personal home defense round.
I usually buy it from Academy Sporting Goods during a walk in trip. Now that they offer FREE shipping on orders over $25, I am now buying it online. I have always used 147 gr., but, noticed they make it in 135 gr.
135 gr.- 1060 FPS
147 gr.- 1000 FPS
Which of the (2) would you use for home/personal defense use?

My pocket pistol is the Ruger LC9S Pro and the sights on this pistol are regulated for 147 Grain bullets, so I would go straight to the 147 grain version. While I can shift the front sight high in the rear notch when shooting 115 grain Remington UMC I am not as consistent with sight alignment when doing this so when I am making my own Once Fired cases I tend to my groups aren't the best I can do. Yeah, I actually prefer Remington brass for reloading, where I do load with either 147 grain Berry's or Extreme plated RN.

So basically, you shoot the 147 gr in your LC9S. Let's say you were to own a Glock G17........of the (2) grain selections of ammo I posted in my OP, which would you select?

If they both function in a given firearm I can't see where it makes any possible difference at all which one a person used.

147 in most instances. Although I would recommend spending $20-25 a box for federal hst instead of the hydra shoks as they offer worlds more consistent expansion

To be honest neither. Hydra shock works but today there are better options. Both HST and GD expand better and penetrate deeper

Are those published speeds or ones you chronographed personally from your gun?
What are you shooting it out of? Reason I ask is because published date is usually from full size duty handguns. It doesn't translate to sub compacts and pocket guns

I would use which ever load hit to point of aim with acceptable accuracy.

Agree with Scott, whichever shoots point of aim / point of impact better.

1 "Agree with Scott, whichever shoots point of aim / point of impact better."...............

2 There have been hundreds of test in newspaper, plain Gel and 4G, to see how a bullet works plus the real thing.
After you do your testing and find your "Best" ammo.........

3 you might try the top awarded ammo of all the test.........
the 147gr HST.

If you like the Hydo's................ fine.

You've been using the 147gr load, so I'd just stick with that.

Personally, I'd rather get HST than Hydrashock. My Beretta 92FS, which I use for my HD gun, is loaded with 147gr HST, FWIW.

Which ever one hits the bad guy in the right spot. It makes no difference.

If it shoots to minute of miscreant I doubt that whether it's the bullet weight for which the sights are regulated makes a hell of a lot of difference. If you are taking shots in extremis at distances where it does, I hope you have excellent legal representation on tap.

On the other hand, if HST or Gold Dot gives a better balance of penetration and expansion once it reaches the bad guy, it would be my choice for sure.

If you have a pair of shoes that you prefer to wear over a pair that is in the same category, but, built with newer materials, would you buy and wear the new shoes?
As I stated before, I would do a walk in to Academy to buy my ammo. They ONLY had 147 gr. Online, they offer 147 gr. and 135 gr. That's why I asked which would be your choice.
And, the published speeds are from the ammo specs. Google it.

If the newer shoes were better than yes

If what you are shooting works well in your gun, I would have NO problem continuing to use the Hydra-Shoks for personal protection. There will always likely be something marginally better or worse, but all of them will do the job if you do yours!

There have been real improvements in bullet technology in recent years.
When I Got more serious about shooting again I was surprised my beloved Hydra Shock had been eclipsed by newer technology.

Here ya go. You can watch reviews (that are done very well) I am not sure he has arrived at a winner yet but the Federal HST is pretty much "perfect" There are many of them for 9mm and 380!

These tests are out of a 3" compact barrel. NO BS or magic.

I carry the 124 HST. The 147 performed just as well.

Google Ammo Quest, Shooting the bull and you will get a line up of all the videos.

The Hydra Shok design is from the late 1980s. It was considered good for its time, but the 9mm wasn't a stellar performer. I carried HS in both 124 grain +P+ and 147. The hot rod 124s seemed to work well in the real world, but the 147s seemed to suffer from the same ills as other 147 grain hollow point designed of the era. The 147 HS was the FBI's 9mm duty load in the 90s following the 1986 Miami tragedy because it seemed to excel at penetration - something that was found to be lacking in the 115 grain HP loads some agents were shooting that day. In fact the bureau's testing criteria seems to favor over penetration in gel. I returned to carrying 9mms when the 147 HS was "retired" by my employer and replaced, first with Ranger T 147s, and now the Gold Dot G2, also in 147. One thing I will say about the Hydra Shok - it was a very accurate round. Good groups about of a Sig or Glock, and 3 inch groups at 25 from my M&P 45 FS. If you can, consider switching up to the 147 grain HST, the Gold Dot, or the Ranger for carry ammo.

I have both HST and original hydrashoks. The HST excels in all the large caibers....the mouse gun loads is where the HST comes up short. shooting the bull.ammoquest on the web tested them all . old school hydrashoks work better in the little guns like 380.

As to the HST I think you need to go back and look at his review of the HST 124 and 147 gr in 9mm.
