Gold dot short barrel 38...
What in the world happened? Can't find them anywhere and it's been like this for a while. Ordered a couple of the 50 round boxes about a year and a half ago. Wanted to get some more to stock up on. Still listed in their website though.
What gives????

Availability of any and all Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel in revolver calibers is very spotty. They only produce it ocassionally. Best to buy a case when its available. Much as I dislike them, my last batch came from Cheaper Than Dirt.

They get produced in cycles. Your best bet is to get on the e-mail update list of a good online retailer.
FYI, last month I knew of 2 or 3 online retailers that had them in stock.

A few dealers got some in December and the sold out quickly.
I bought 4 boxes of 50 at that time for about $26 per box.
I believe it was SGAmmo and Palmetto State Armory that had them

I used to buy....
...Speer stuff exclusively and there was always plenty around. I seldom find what I want or even need now.

CCI-53921-BX This is the SKU for the short barrel 50 round box. CCI-23921-BX is the 20 round box of the short barrel. I think they stopped putting short barrel on the boxes a few years ago.
And in 38 and 357 mag the 135 gr projectile has always been the short barrel.

There is also a 125 gr gold dot 38 special +P. The gelatin tests I've seen on the web show it expands just fine out of a 2" snub. (see Pocket guns and gear test page).
Plus, there is a standard pressure 125 gr gold dot on the law enforcement Speer web site. Never seen a test of that, though.
Those may be more available than the 135 gr.

I have seen one or two ballistic test for the 125 gr out of short barrels that did fairly well, but I have also seen as many or more where the 125 didn't expand. While better than ball ammo, the 125gr is not the low velocity expander that the 135 grain expander is.

I just bought them today, they are the short barrel 53921 /50 rd, 23921/20 rd. If you check Speer site the numbers match, newer box. Be Safe,

The 135gr bullet was specifically designed to reliably expand at the lower velocities associated with a short barrel handgun. The 125gr bullet was not so it is less suited for use in a short barrel.
