I cannot think of any .40 S&W round that is not capable of being used for personal protection. Even inexpensive range ammo can be used for that purpose.

If you want to use high quality hollow points or other "self defense" ammunition I recommend that you buy a couple of boxes and take them and the gun to the range. See if the gun "likes" this ammunition - does it feed well, no stoppages, etc., and is it accurate? Run the first box through and if all is well run SOME of the second box through. All should remain well. Take the gun home, clean it, load it, you're good to go.

This presumes you are legally qualified to carry a concealed handgun and have the requisite skills, etc. If you don't then get some instruction whilst you learn about the gun and the ammo. But I will wager you are past that point.

Your edit to identify your current ammunition tells me you are past the point I mentioned.

Proper bullet placement trumps all other ammunition selection criteria.

My S&W M&P40 FS mags are loaded with Blazer Brass 40 S&W 165gr. FMJ
The bullet goes where I'm aiming and they are problem free.
That works for me.

As others have mentioned, any .40 caliber bullet will work. It's up to you to decide how much you want to invest in better, as opposed to good or adequate.

You don't mention what type of 180-gr JHP you're using, but that's a good start.

Some folks will use nothing but (what they perceive to be) the best SD ammo. I'm pretty happy with a reliable HP in the weight my gun prefers.

Welcome to the forum.

If you do a search you'll probably be able to find some threads on ammo recommendations. You'll find a lot of info and opinions. Everybody has different requirements for their ammo.

Reliability and your ability to shoot it well are the most important requirements. But as long as those requirements are met, it's best to use a good quality JHP.

Google Dr. Roberts ammo list and you'll find some good defensive ammo recommendations for your caliber.

My own personal preference is for medium- to heavy-weight bullets, so in .40 S&W I'd probably pick 165gr or 180gr JHP. It's hard to go wrong with Speer Gold Dots or Federal HST. When I had a Glock 23 I used 165gr Gold Dots. If I were going to carry a .40 now, I'd probably go with 180gr HST.

But again, this is just my own personal preference. If the load you're using works for you and meets your needs, it should be fine.
